I am not an adult with CF I'm a mom of a child with CF. Recently my doc. told me that it's best to wait 15 min. after eating the enzymes to eat. I was just wondering as adults if you do this or if you know exactly why this would be important. Have you done it both ways and noticed a difference?

Thanks!

It's wonderful to be able to ask adults with CF questions because many of our little ones can't tell us how they feel etc.

my daughter is 14yrs with c/f and she has her enzymes at the beginning of her food or while she is eating.

In the past if she wasnt putting weight on they suggested that she have them spread at intervals during her meal.

She is on 3 with meals and 2 with snacks (creon forte)

I havnt heard of having to have them 15mins b4 food before. Maybe its to get them to start working b4 the food reaches the stomach so as for better digestion. (not sure)

When I was young my doc told us 30 minutes before or after eating. I normally take my enzymes after I eat and have no "issues" by doing it that way.

I can understand why you would take them 15 minutes beforehand - because you would want to give the med time to get into your system so the enzymes could assist you in digesting the food from the very first bite to the very last.

That being said I have been told by my doc it is best to take them with the first bite of food. For the same reason - so they are in your system and helping digest ALL the food. I used to take them towards the end of my meals because I would always just get hungry and never took time to take them before eating. I never had any MAJOR problems with taking them after meals, but I take them before meals now since the doc recommended and everything is fine.
