I've worn one on an airplane once. And with my family once when almost everyone was sick. One time I made my lil sister wear one-she had pneumonia and due to an emergency situation I had to babysit her.
The unfortunate reality-(as I've been, at least, told by several nurses and docs) is that they help more so with exhaled germs than preventing the wearer from inhaling germs. So all the sick people would have to wear them. Like someone else said, most viruses aren't airborne anyway-you have to touch something and then touch your face to get it.
But, I still think on airplanes is a good idea-it can only help.

My doc says if it works, it works. He's never said he doesn't think
it's doing anything. I know that it is in part due to that i'm not
touching my face, but I personally have been doing a lot better, so
i'm going to keep doing it. I have found that no one treats me that
differently if they are any kind of decent person. *shrug* I
breathe easier through them, and i've been healthier since
starting.<br>
<br>
I know that they work atleast on some level because I have spent
10+ days in a house of sick people/kids rotating getting sick and I
didn't.<br>

Thanks for all the replies<br>

I wear them at CF Clinic appts, of course & sometimes (not always) when I've visited people in the hospital, both for their protection (if they are undergoing chemo & are immune compromised) and for mine so I don't catch someone's cold when they're coughing/sneezing in a close space such as the elevator.

Hi Ceci!
Your mom mentioned in an email that you wear masks to school and I was going to ask her about it. I honestly have never thought of wearing them-but I think its a great idea. Of course, I am usually at home since I work from home...and have the kids at home when I am not working. I did wear a mask one time just after I had Ella and had a bad PA lung infection...but that was just to protect her from getting sick and so I wouldn't be coughing all over her.
I think for me the most important thing is keeping up on my meds, and making an attempt not to touch my face, etc at all, if I can help it. I need to get better at using the hand sanitizer too. And I also bought that new lysol spray that kills tons of bacteria!
Its good to see you here!!

Hi Marci,  Thanks for the welcome. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"><br>

I use hand sanitizer a lot, but i can't stand that lysol stuff.
Makes me chest hurt if i'm around it. I also can't stand bleach. My
lungs just ache.<br>
<br>
Re social life to above poster: My social life isn't impacted at
all, I go to community college and never went to public school past
3rd grade. The people that I have friendships with interact with me
as if the mask weren't there. I'm also a math tutor at the
community college, for many people in the learning center. I
haven't ever had a person be unkind, only inquizitive. Some people
actually never ask why, they just treat me like it isn't there. I
always explain at the beginning of a class why it's there, and
that's it. I have had very few people ask further questions. People
I don't know say hi to me when walking by, smile, just as if
i'm not wearing it. I honestly forget that I am wearing it until I
see a reflection of myself.<br>
<br>
But anyway, I don't mind them, and I believe they are helping.
The certainly aren't hurting anything. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"><br>

I have never worn a mask in public. Not around random people, not around sick people, not around other CFers. Ever. And I'm with Allie and Ry. I'd sooner take out some vital organ with a kitchen utensil than wear masks frickin everywhere. My doc, same as Kylie's, would call me loony toons.

I never would, but as long as it's what you want to do, hell. Do what you want, you're a big girl.
