You mentioned in another post that baby's growth has slowed. Can you explain? Remember ultrasounds can be off. What is baby measuring? How far apart were the ultrasounds that showed the slow growth? I had an u/s at 34 weeks and she is measuring in the 32nd percentile - basically exactly the same my son was at the same point in pregnancy and he was 5 lbs 11 oz full term. The told me that she weighed 4 lbs 13 oz at 34 weeks - so lets say she ends up weighing 6 lbs at 40 weeks - that would have her gain a little over a 1 lb in 6 weeks in the womb. Babies grow at different rates.

Hi Caroline,

Well there've been a couple of growth issues - in the last 4 scans (so over the last 7 weeks, I've been having them fortnightly and now weekly) the head size has been showing as small - ie below the 3rd percentile. Naturally this has had us worried. The OB says that she thinks on balance that this is probably just a normal baby with a small head inherited from me and my dh. The growth didn't start to fall off until week 30 which is a good sign apparently so we're hoping it's not too significant - of course the OB can't rule out that it could be an indicator of something bad (and there are a whole host of scary developmental syndromes associated with v small head size)

So that's one thing - and then on the last scan they estimated that overall the baby had only gained 2 ounces in the last couple of weeks - the gain before that had been bang on average. So they're keeping an eye on the weight.

I know that scans can be inaccurate and there is such a thing as too much information!! The baby's weight is currently about 5lb 2 ounces so she's a safe weight to be born whatever happens in the next couple of weeks. The OB says she wouldn't consider intervening unless growth stopped altogether or went backwards.

It's just hard not to worry when it's our first and we had such a long hard road to get pregnant,

Elizab x

PS Sorry for the chapter and verse, bet you're sorry you asked now!

Elizab - that wasn't a novel at all. I can see why you're worried. Anything we think something could potentially be wrong with our LOs we worry. When are you getting your next scan? I'm sorry that you have to deal with this worry for the next few weeks. I am hoping that it is just inaccurate measurements. Ultrasounds are wonderful sometimes but like you said, sometimes it is just too much info and there is a margin of error (and it gets larger as pregnancy progresses) so you never know exactly. And somebody has to be at the bottom of the charts right?
