Does anyone do rock climbing?

I was talking to some friends from college the other day and one of them has gotten into rock climbing. It seemed neat to me, and I liked the idea of "me versus the wall" and setting my own pace.

I was just wondering if anyone else does this for exercise/strength training and how you like it, and how you got started? Any advice? My arms and legs are basically muscle-less twigs at the moment, would I have to beef up a bit before I can start?

Thanks for any help.

Sevenstars, I love climbing! Before I took a big dip in pfts, I was climbing several times a week for a few years and completely loved it. It's a serious muscle builder as you get can get wiped out within a matter of 10 minutes, but the more you press on and enjoy the challenge, the stronger you get. It's a mind, body, spirit game you play with yourself (or with others if you want ). I find it addicting actually. I wish I was still in climbing shape, it feels great. I used to get more winded in some of the hikes up to the walls then the actual climbing itself, which I always thought was strange. Nonetheless, it is an awesome cardio workout, plus everything else.

Are your friends going to an inside gym or outside? I prefer outside, but enjoyed to go inside when the weather was bad.

You can start at any strength, and you'll basically go as far as you can go. Your body won't let you go any further then what you're in shape for. You'll probably be completely spent (every single muscle in your body) within your first 2-3 tries/climbs, but that's okay. Every time you go after that you'll see you can keep climbing higher or for longer periods of time and getting stronger and more confident. It's so much fun, I hope you like it.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Have fun!

Haven't done the rock climbing thing; but, love to hike. Uphill anything is great cardio. I like that deep breathing, what a good feeling. I would start at your own pace and work up from there. I know that is not much help, but you know what you are capable of and where to set your goals.
