Does the vest always help?

Hey Everyone,

I've noticed recently that I seem to cough up more stuff just by doing the HS alone, without the vest, versus doing both. Is it possible that the vest could actually be hindering my airway clearance in some way? Thanks for any advice!

What Ive been told the vest is suppose to help move the mucous around and up and out, something like that, I can never cough any mucous up during my treatments or at all period.

If the vest is not set on settings that meet your needs then absoluely it can hinder things. Although a majority of people have no problems, I am one that has to adjust the settings according to how I feel that day. I have SEVERE airway reactions due to muscular issues which are heightened or lessened by the vest depending on the settings. I sat with the therapist from my clinic a few years ago & actually played with each & every setting to get the biggest benefit to me then I adjusted it here/there to other issues that come up. I am also one that doesnt see the affects immediately. I cough things up later, but I do much of my productive coughing after manual clapping is over also.

I used the vest for many years. I was probably one of the first users of the vest when it came out. I found that if you huff out your cough during the session it will help. When my CF progressed, i used the Susanne's Somers thigh master along with vesting to aid in my coughing. It helped to strengthen my chest and arm muscles while coughing. I would cough up lots of goodies.

when I was waiting for my first transplant, I did four CPT therapies and after my therapist would leave, I would use my vest for fifteen minutes. Thankfully, I did all this because I still progressed and I cannot imagine how I would have survived if i did not bring up all that mucus.

Drink water in small sips to see if that helps.

hmm I heard that your not supposed to use the vest while taking aerosoles because you cant take as big as breaths as you could without using it!! But I dont use the vest anymore becuase I get better results when someone beats on me!! But yes that hypertonic saline makes me cough..!! But if the vest makes you cough without the hypertonic saline.. I would do like the vest then the aerosoles.. or vice versa!! Hope everything works out for you!!

the vest works better for me than manual-except if I have a bad exacerbation or have one problem area-then isolated clapping on that area is best.
using the vet properly gives me alot of sputum with each treatment.
And no, I don't do aerosals while doing my vest anymore b/c I can't take as deep of breaths to get the med in. I think its b/c I'm pregnant-the pressure is building. So my therapies take longer.
