Rip had it done a couple of times after we were married .I totally freaked out about the idea.
He said it wasn't as bad as it sounds (of course he said that about almost everything). But this article <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.virtualcancercentre.com/treatments.asp?sid=60">http://www.virtualcancercentre.../treatments.asp?sid=60</a> says its not so painful as to need anesthesia.

Good luck with this (having pleural effusion sure does explain your pain). I'm sure you'll feel better when it is out of there.
