There is no reason CF or CFRD should keep you from getting a driver's license. I have mine. Most of us above age 16 have our licenses.

I didn't get mine until I was 27! Not because I have CF but because it made me a little nervous!!

I have a ?? also regarding CFRD. & licenses. Although it shouldnt affect you obtaining it....does anyone recall if its one of the medical issues listed that you must declare like epilepsy? I am asking because if it is one of the medical issues that must be disclosed and you dont, but then have a sugar drop or something while driving and cause injury....you are not just causing injury. You are then technically committing a felony by falsely filling out the papers. I dont mean to go to that extreme, but depending on the person its a possibility such a thing could occur.

I have CF AND CFRD and I have my drivers license. I developed CFRD after getting my license, but I have had to replace my license several times since then and have never had it become an issue. If you are concerned I would make them aware of it. They MAY put a note on your license that this driver is diabetic but that would be about it I would imagine.

Otherwise I would just make sure to take a snack with you when you drive. I have also had doctors tell me to check my blood sugar before I get in the car to drive because I have had issues with my sugar dropping extremely low (i.e. 40s) without getting symptoms. Just be cautious and very aware of your sugar when you are driving and it should not be a problem - also if you feel weak or shaky or like you need something to eat or drink for your sugar eat or drink it THEN. Do not put it off til you get to your destination. If you don't have anything pull over at the nearest fast food place or store and get something. With fast food get a soda or fries - if you get fries drink the soda first though - the fries will actually cause your sugar to rise more slowly whereas drinking the soda first will cause a rapid increase.

Just think of how many people are diabetic in some form in this country - now think if all of those people were NOT allowed to drive. We would have very little traffic lol.

Good luck with the testing and I hope you get your license.

Take Care and happy and safe driving.

CF and/ of CFRD alone cannot keep you from getting a license, unless a doctor reports that you have impairments due to either one of them. For instance, I had a jackass HMO doctor report to the DMV, I didn't know he did it, and I can only assume it was that my b/s's weren't A+. My license was suspended for a few weeks until I had an interview with the DMV, and reporting I've never had trouble driving dispite my b/s's. That was over 7 years ago. I'm 40, and that is the ONLY thing I've run into.

My experience was one in a million, I'm sure. But again, in general, neither can keep you from getting a license.

My husband is diabetic and has been since he was 5 and he has had his driver's license since he was 16 with no problems. The only license he cannot get is a CDL license to drive a semi or something big like that because it's against the law. In the law it talks about loss of conciousness because of long periods of driving and not eating while truck driving. So that is a precaution but a regular driver's license is okay because you drive for shorter periods of time. The only thing they do is put a medical thing on his license saying he's diabetic. He used to have a card that said "I'm not drunk I'm diabetic" in his wallet in case he got low and got pulled over and couldn't explain himself. Anywho you can get a driver's license and be diabetic. Sorry for the rambling!!
