christy (<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://colormehealthy.blogspot.com)">http://colormehealthy.blogspot.com)</a> also had her transplant there (living lobar) about 8 years ago i think. she is still seen by the duke team and lives in NC. she's a really awesome person and a great cyster -- definitely get in touch with her and let her know you're coming up!

I have heard good and bad things about them. I would not want to try to be a "lucky" one who gets listed. I would rather be guaranteed a spot on the list and get it when the time is right...like I did at the Cleveland Clinic. I was listed there when I needed to be listed and I was transplanted in 5 months.

What I really don't like about Duke, is you have to move there and participate in Life classes (or something like that) and a really vigorous pulmo rehab. There is no way I would have been able to do that. I have also known some people who went through all the classes and rehab and then Duke decided that they couldn't list them for one reason or another. I know a lady who went through all of this...moved there from FL, went through the rehab and did really well with it, and then Duke refused to list her. She went back home to FL, gave up because she thought no other transplant center would list her, and died a while later.

On the flip-side, there are people I know who had theirs there and are doing well. I guess my main problem is with the way they work things there.

I had an amazing experience at Duke! Like Patty said, you need to participate in their pulmonary rehab. Which I did pre- and post transplant. If I didn't I seriously doubt I'd be alive today, no joke. They require it to make sure your in tip top shape for the surgery, plus they give alot of incredible classes to prepare you for the transplant. I had very little questions before my trnasplant, what it involved, what to expect and post care, ect. all because of those classes. I also really appreciated the therapy before and after transplant since it bonded me with life long transplant buddies who encourage each other throughout our journey.

I've never heard what Piper said, but I can tell you I had a very difficult antibody which they told me later, "had a less then 1% chance of matching" which they found. I also believe this donor was God sent, but am so thankful I was at Duke when I was.

All of the transplant doctors are top notch and I have no complaints against them.

It is a lifetime and not a cheap commitment, but isn't a second chance of life worth it? It was for me, for sure!!

Good luck with everything, Jessica.
