Dylan's Home From the Hospital

Hey everyone,

Well, Dylans surgery went really well. I think he was under for maybe 15 minutes. Our Doc was super fast!! But they did go through is mouth so no stitches. (even better!) They got him into recovery and he woke up way to early. He was hurting a lot so they started morphine right away. They had him in recovery for 3 hours due to the fact they didnt have a room for him.
The first couple of days werent good but now that we are home he seems to be doing much better. They did a sample feed on him to teach us how. Our specialist doesnt want us to start feedings until all the pain is gone. He doesnt want Dylan to associate pain with his feedings. Dylan didnt like getting his first feeding. He wanted it over and done with and was very angry. We kept encouraging him and telling him that it will get easier. His aunt and uncle were in the room so I think he was not happy about having to share that with them.
He came home with a slight fever which I was a little worried about but this morning its gone. We will monitor it for the next few days to make sure it doesnt come back.

So, for the most part he is doing pretty good. I know he will adjust and this will become normal for him. Right now, he must do is feedings 7 days a week. Hopefully that will change. He lost 3 pounds in the hospital so hopefully we can start soon.

Welcome Home!

I love Marissa's mickey. She is now nine years old, but got hers when she was four. Once the soreness is over, you and Dylan will love his mickey as well. He will put on weight like a champ now, and the stress at the dinner table needn't be there anymore.

Marissa sees added benefits to it in that she never has to taste "yucky" medicines. She never has to be "nagged" to eat anymore.

I see added benefits in that unlike other children, on those times where they are sick and getting extra water in them is a big plus, I can hook her up while she "sleeps off her bugs." Her doctor apparently hadn't thought of putting water in her feeding tube, but I have a son with asthma, and one of the ways we were told to keep him healthy was to have him drink 8 8oz glasses of water a day. (What a pain that was at times!)

When I first came on the seen with Riss she had a bad cold and was running a fever, not drinking or eating. I hooked her up to water, and the doc (and Grandma) was impressed at how quickly she quit acting lethargic. Now the doc has us run clear water in her bag (during the day) whenever we think she isn't drinking enough. We also give her a can of water with her food in the evening.

I wouldn't suggest you do any of this until speaking with your doctor, but keep it in mind for those times when you know he is getting dehydrated. WE DON'T NEED IV'S! YEAH!!

The one question I do have and I will be calling his clinic monday, Do I continue to make his power shakes during the day? Im worried about developing Diabites with all the extra sugar???? Should this be any concern????
