Eating during treatments

I'm with Christian on this one. The vest (and other forms of clearance) are only effective if you're making yourself cough. Most doctors I've had recommend coughing after each 5 min cycle. So for me, personally, there would be no way to eat for 5 minutes then really make myself cough up junk. Too gross. Who wants to eat with a spit cup next to them anyway? Ewww...

I do other things -- TV or a book or the computer. I'm all for multitasking, but things that make it difficult to stop FREQUENTLY and cough are just cheating yourself out of a good treatment, honestly. I know that sounds super harsh since we're already doing so much, but the vest really is a lot more than just passive shaking.

Emily coughs so much while vesting I'm afraid she'd choke or aspirate if she tried to eat. She does keep a cup of water with her when she does her vest, but insists on turning the vest off when she drinks (it makes her gag to drink while it's on.)

Exactly. And I say this only hoping maybe my experiences could help someone else someday-but for years I did not know what effective airway clearance was. It took finding a good clinic to teach me. Treatments aren't sitting with a neb in your mouth a being shaken for 30 mins. Its active coughing, breathing and spitting. My goal for each treatment is to spit out a quarter cup of mucus.
When I started doing treatments correctly, my pfts jumped dramatically, and my whole life basically changed for the better.
So not to make this a rant or anything (lol!) but just my 2 cents. Of course there are times when you can't do everyhting 'by the book'-but overall I reach for a goal.
I have so little "me" time-my pt time is valuable. I want to make it count. I'd literally rather eat in the shower or the car instead of during pt time. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
