exercise and the heat

When the heat index is 115 no one should be playing outside for extensive time, cf or not. Even 15 mins isn't good. I was outside last friday-(i live in the nyc suburbs)-and after being outside for only 5 mins i had that inner gut 'i shouldn't be here' feeling.
Gatorade gatorade gatorade folks!
And be careful with salt shakers or tabs-you gotta drink alot of fluids to keep up with then. Salts important, but it also soaks up every drop of water in you so make up for it.
My cut off temp is about 95, depending on heat index. But even then I keep on top of fluids, basically I have a drink in hand all day.
But friday and saturday in the northeast-I wouldn't let my non cf daughter outside to play.
Well, it's been 38 days of 100 + heat and no signs of change. In my area we are about to break the record of the hottest summer ever of all time in my area. Usually, i do my best to do all i can before 12 or 1 and i stay inside until its cooler. I drink lots of water and carry water bottles wherever i go. if i have to go out in the heat, i try to park in the shade or as close to the building if i can. turn all the fans on in my house and i sometimes bring in small fans in a room. I wear light clothing. cool or lukewarm baths are good.

I spent about 5 years here in the inland empire of southern california getting what i thought was dehydrated, because of the hot (100+ degree )summers (i used to work in it) i thought water, saly, sunflower seeds,,, et cetera were enough, but i realized that even though i thought i was taking in enough salt, it wasnt nearly enough.. and i was drinking tons of water, but it was in fact the electrolytes that were getting severly imbalanced.

there is a drink called "oral rehydration solution", google can help you get the precise amounts of the ingredients, but basically it is salt, sugar and water. And it has LITERALLY saved my life. i used to get so electrolyte-imbalanced that in the afternoon of a hot day, i would get a headache, start throwing up, have fuzzy vision, and then have to go home, and it would take two days to recuperate from it. (i know i should have been admitted to the hospital) That was BEFORE i found the drink. Since then, i drink it daily (if it's over 90 degrees) as a preventative measure, it works wonders. An article i read says that in addition to the salt, the body needs the sugar too, thats why the formula calls for both. By itself it tastes nasty, but adding a LOT of koolaid mix helps the taste.

I've tried gatorade and water in the Austin heat. Doesn't work well. My advice: two words: pickle juice.

Pickle juice has 10x the salt ("electrolytes) that gatorade has, and no sugar (which dehydrates you). You can buy it in little bottles, and it is especially great for CFers because of the immense amount of salt in it!

Large amounts of sugar by itself with nothing to balance it would of course dehydrate you, (such as, if one drank sodas and not much else) but some is helpful in digesting the large amounts of salt a cf'er would need if they were to be out in the heat and sweat... After fooling with that salty drink, and hours and hours of researching what is actually needed in a body, the best and easiest remedy I've found for dealing with heat is simply to add salt to gatorade... (I'm not saying drink ONLY salty gatorade, of course water is also very important) Since we lose so much, we need to replenish it, but I never knew how much a person lost until I looked up actual numbers...
