I am trying to get back into shape and am looking for words of inspiration. I use to run 3 miles/5 days per week so I know I can do it.

For all you runners out there, what was your FEV1 before exercising and now? How long have you held that advantage? Thank you!

Greatest FEV1 increase with exercise!!!

I don't know but I'll try to tell you with my next spirometry. I can say that I am sooooooo excited to have gone from walking for 20 min with my lungs and legs burning and strange cramps at recent pneumonia sites, to running for about 4 minutes during a 30 minute walk, and am now up to at least 20 mins of a 40 minutes outing. I feel clear mucus-wise for a couple hours after I finish! EVen longer if I stay outside--yay.

Can I ask a few questions while you have the attention of people who are jogging?

I have noticed that I do so much worse cough-wise on off days, so I am wondering if it is okay to not have off days. Maybe I can do much less a couple days a week, but still do something?
Every time I go out, it takes me about ten minutes to walk off stiffness and get my breathing rhythm right so that I can even think about jogging. I wasn't like this in my early twenties. Does anyone else feel this way?
My right knee pops with every stride. Ew, right? Do I need to see a doctor? (My ankles used to hurt more and have actually improved a little with more running!)
Unfortunately, I get the "trots" about 1/4 workouts and have to circle back to my house to use the bathroom :-( I go before I leave too.

I was also wondering what people do with the cold weather. I am a lot sicker in the winter, but I think I will still try to walk/run outside because I seem to have more issues with inside air. It is just so hard to get out of bed in the dark and cold. Do you join a gym? (one with weel-spaced treadmills so I don't freak people out with my cough?)

Missy, keep me posted! I so happy for you that you have been able to get in shape!!!

I remember when I use to run 3 miles/5 days per week that I rarely had any mucus issues. As a matter of fact, I didn't even have to do the Vest anymore!!! My CF doctor was fine with it!!! I only did my Albuterol and Pulmozyme. I wasn't on Hypertonic Saline yet.

Right now, I'm walking/running for 25 minutes/3 days per week. I do feel better for hours after I exercise; however, days I'm off, I feel more congested.

I'm not saying that I'll go back to 3 miles/5 days per week, but once you are in the 'habit', it's a 'piece of cake'. Trust me!

It was my foolish mistake to stop. My husband and I decided we would try and have kids. I was running so much that my cycles were starting to get irregular. That's why I stopped. My CF doctor told me to 'slow down', and I ultimately quit...

I really don't know how much my FEV1 went up during that time because I was seeing a doctor in Philadelphia. When I switched doctors, my records got thrown in medical records.

When I stopped, I was running about 30 minutes out of 40, if that helps. I was also considering entering my first 5K! I SHOULD NEVER HAVE STOPPED!!!

Greatest FEV1 increase with exercise!!!

Hey!
I saw my FEV's go from around 54% and then top out at 74% after about three months of training just for a 10k! It was crazy I tell ya. During my training for the half marathon I'm convinced I worded off some infections..eventhough my PFT's float from the high 50's to the mid 60's I'm sure if I wasn't active things would not be so good. Coupled with Hypertonic Saline and good nutrition I have all three to thank for my recent good health. I'm fighting an infection right now and am a little bummed since I've been riding my bike 30-50 miles a day for the past month.

Melissa--You should always give yourself at least 1 good day of total rest. Even marathon runners or short distance who are in tip top shape take 1-2 days off. It is very hard for me take a day off, especially during my long mileage weeks I had to force myself to not run. Your body needs the rest but as far as the lung congestion goes....up your vest or do some huff coughs to work that stuff out?

It always takes me a cool 1-1.5 miles to really get in my groove of good breathing and feeling good and ready to run some long miles. Oh man the bladder is a huge problem for me when running! I brave it and run outside until it is below 20 degrees. I have great cold weather gear and I find it actually refreshing to run in the cold..my lungs don't mind it too much. I HATE treadmills haha.

PM with any questions!! Keep running,
Em
