Greatest FEV1 increase with exercise!!!

Jenny: My PFTs have always remained about the same, but doing a HTS treatment and then going running allows me to cough up way more than usual. Also, I tend to focus on my PFTs not dropping and like to think it's my exercise that keeps them where they're at. So don't get discouraged if you don't jump as much as you'd like, just think "I'm keeping them from deteriorating!"

Missy: How old are your shoes? Good supportive shoes are one of the best things you can invest in for running/jogging. Even if the soles seem alright, after a lot of wear the support inside breaks down and then you're transferring that impact to your knees. On days "off" I bike or something low impact. About the cold: Running outside is harder in the winter on our lungs, but I found if I wore a scarf or a ski mask that I could breathe into, the warmer air wasn't such a "shock" to my system. But yes, the gym is a great option (especially here in Chicago where sometimes it just hurts to be outside in the winter!).

Hope that helps! Keep running!

Greatest FEV1 increase with exercise!!!

Jenny,
Three miles five days a week is great! And so is what you are doing now. Good job getting back into it. I tend to be an all-or-nothing kind of person so I can understand how you stopped rather than lightened up your workout. Right now, to work in time for exercise on top of the other treatments, I have almost completely stopped my freelance editing work (I used to edit after my kids went to bed).
The only other time in my life that I was running regularly was in high school and I still maintained regular cycles, but I don't have CF--just bronchiectasis. And I was working at McDonalds and TJ Cinnamon Buns :) I took in so many calories a day it was ridiculous. Right now I ride the BMI line between normal and underweight.
I don't know if you are still TTCing or not, but best wishes if you are and hugs for the tough decision if you are taking a break or stopping. My health declined with each kid. No regrets, just hindsight 20/20, you know?

Em,
Thanks for the advice about taking a day or two off. And about running in the cold: I have some fleece-ish pants and a decent jacket, now I just need some motivation when it is dark and subzero. A few more months before that happens, anyway.
My bathroom issue is #2/3. Weird huh, since I don't have CF and having kids is supposed to trash your bladder. I guess either way it is darned inconvenient!
Glad to know I am not the only one who needs a decent warm-up.

Lindsay,
I got some new shoes a week ago :) Heeeey...maybe that is what is helping my ankles as opposed to my upped mileage...lol at my brilliant connection. I am also trying to wear my new shoes for working out only and saving my old-ish ones for washing dishes and day-to-day activities. My husband has been reading up on running/exercise and he got the advice to buy new shoes half-way through the life of pair #1 and then alternate them, so you can tell when pair #1 is getting bad and so you aren't running everyday on dying shoes. Interesting idea, though I'd be tempted to just wear pair #2 all the time.
I'll try the ski mask thing this winter. I live in NJ so it is cold but not as bad as Chicago.
Thanks for the advice:)

Greatest FEV1 increase with exercise!!!

As of right now, I probably only walk about 1 mile on the treadmill per week. But I also do manual labor on cars, so I work in a garage outside, and have to walk up and down steps all day changing oil in cars. In September, I plan on moving back in with my parents, because this economy is putting a stranglehold on me financially, and a plus is I can use their treadmill anytime I please. I'm going to exercise so much it'll make Jack Lalane cringe. Last time, my FEV1 was 76%, my next visit is in October, I hope it's at least 78-80. I also plan on asking my doctor if I can experiment on oral medication for my diabetes, opposed to Novolog. It seems as though my pancreas still produces at least some insulin, as I've been able to eliminate the need for long acting insulin, so hopefully with much exercise and eating more healthy, I can utilize pills.
