Greatest FEV1 increase with exercise!!!
Jenny: My PFTs have always remained about the same, but doing a HTS treatment and then going running allows me to cough up way more than usual. Also, I tend to focus on my PFTs not dropping and like to think it's my exercise that keeps them where they're at. So don't get discouraged if you don't jump as much as you'd like, just think "I'm keeping them from deteriorating!"
Missy: How old are your shoes? Good supportive shoes are one of the best things you can invest in for running/jogging. Even if the soles seem alright, after a lot of wear the support inside breaks down and then you're transferring that impact to your knees. On days "off" I bike or something low impact. About the cold: Running outside is harder in the winter on our lungs, but I found if I wore a scarf or a ski mask that I could breathe into, the warmer air wasn't such a "shock" to my system. But yes, the gym is a great option (especially here in Chicago where sometimes it just hurts to be outside in the winter!).
Hope that helps! Keep running!
