Exercise

Ok for all you exercise buffs. I need your advice.
When asked by drs if I exercise, my response is always, "not on purpose".
I would like to be able to change that answer to, "of course I do".
But I need some help.
I dont want to join a gym, I have done that before and just wasted the money.
I would like to find an exercise that I can do at home to increase my fev1. I has fallen from 58% to 51%. I just got out of the hospital from doing a tune up. I dont feel like this was a good tune up. I still feel congested but for the life of me I could not get my Dr to come see me or listen to my messages.
So here is my questions.
Not having any formal exercise equipment, what do you reccomend for me to start doing?
I would like to keep it indoors because it is cold outside.
I hope that after we move into our new home we can get a treadmill.
But what can I start doing now?
If you have any ideas please let me know.
Thanks

First of all congrats on making any kind of attempt!!! Also, don't be disappointed if exercise does not increase your FEV1......though it might. It has many benefits though! Keeps your lungs healthy and stable which keeps you out of the hospital. Gives your body strength to fight those nasty bugs and keeps your FEV1 from falling. So......I can make a few suggestions. My favorite thing to do is walk....even in the cold. As long is it is 40 or above. I know you don't want to go out though.......you are also smart not to invest in a gym membership. You can usually find treadmills second hand for a good price. Exercise DVD's can be good with maybe a resistance band or exercise ball. If you have a Wii system, I hear the WiiFit is a lot of fun. Start with something maybe less than 10 minutes a day and work yourself up to more! Anyway.....find something you like or can at least tolerate and stick with it. You will be surprised at the benefits.

Yea I hear what you are saying about not wanting to exercise, Khristina. A few years ago, picking up the TV remote was more then enough exercise for me. But recently, I have taken the incentive to exercise more, and have noticed that my FEV1's have never fallen below 76%. I think the best thing I have done yet is purchase a recumbent bicycle and set it up right beside my bed. It's comfortable as all hell, and I just watch tv while I go for miles and miles. Fun and Fitness. You can't go wrong.

Most home exercise equipment eventually becomes something that you hang your clothes on. However the machine that retains the highest usage is the Treadmill. Since you are going to buy one soon and need something in the meantime -- if you have a bicycle, you can by something called a bike indoor trainer. It is a kind of a stand that holds your bike in place essentially making it an exercise bike. You can one for as little as $70 from a bike shop or on-line.

I know people love the Wii and if I were to exercise indoors, I would get that. I personally like taking classes at a gym. I always talk to the teacher and ask them if it's okay if I modify some of the exercises and for me, that's the best way to exercise.

When I do exercise at home I use hand weights and a kit with an exercise ball and bands. The bands have an attachment so that you you can put it in the space where the door meets the wall. You close the door and then the band is anchored so you can use to do lots of different exercises. And although I do my own cardio routine, I usually don't get my heart rate up as high as I would like as when I'm at the gym.

I've also used videos, but to see the same routine everyday gets tiring. My friend loves a tape called NIA dancing. It's a low impact work out.

I think what you do is less important than just doing something that you like. When I started to exercise, the change in all my lab tests were remarkable. Mt pulse went from over 100 to 72 and below in a short time. My blood pressure went from 120/80 to 110/68. My cholestoral level changed from ok to superb. The few abnormal blood test became normal. My FEV1 rose alot, but I can't say it was due soley to exercise. But exercise changes how your body fights infection. And it feels so much better when you become stronger and find yourself able to carry packages without huffing or climbing a flight of stairs much more easily.
