Exercise

I have a few questions for those of you who exercise on a regular basis or who are just starting out:
Do you ever get headaches when you exert yourself?
How often do you exercise?
How much?
When do you know you have done enough?
Can you do too much?
What do you do for exercise?
Do you cough a lot during exercise or more afterwards?

Sorry for so many questions but it has been a while since I have regularly exercised. Is it suppose to make me so tired?

Steph:

I exercise 4-5 times a week. I walk on a treadmill for 40 minutes with a warm up and cool down included in those minutes. I walk at a pace of about 4.2-4.3 with a slight increase. I have found that doing this I can stay at my target heartrate. During this time I cough up a ton. I think of it as another treatment. I am probably coughing about 10-15 minutes of the time spent walking but I think it does wonders for me. After I first had my baby and was doing very poor healthwise I kicked things into high gear and exercised 6 times a week. My doctors didn't think that I would ever get off continuous oxygen, but I have been off it for nearly 7 months now. I still have to use oxygen to exercise and sleep, but I have a feeling with continued hard work I will even be able to get off of that. I hope this helps in some way. Oh and I just use a treadmill. Good Luck and stick to it because I really feel that it can truly help you!!!

Hi Steph,

Here are my answers to your questions.

1. I don't ever get headaches.
2. I exercise 5 days a week for 35 minutes each time.
3. I run on my treadmill for two miles.
4. I usually push my body to the limits. I know when I need to slow down and walk for a second when my breathing gets way to fast and shallow. Then I walk for a little. If I would continue to run and ignore my breathing I would get a low-grade fever of 99.5 for the next 3-4 hours.
5. Yes, you can do to much. If you overdo an exercise, in my case (a fever) all your work and effort was in vain. Instead of increasing your endurance and creating better lung capacity, you are just burning yourself out. Not to mention, you could feel like crap for more than a day.
6. Like I said, I run 2 miles for 35 minutes 5 days a week. I take off on Thursdays and Sundays. I find that if I take 2 days off in a row, the next time I run is so much harder. Also when I started to exercise, I made sure not to miss a single day for like 1 month. Once I built a tolerance, I could miss a little bit without paying for it the next day I ran.
7. The first five minutes I cough a lot. My lungs need to get warmed up. Once I'm into the exercise, I don't cough much unless I start to overdo it. I don't really cough too much afterwards. What I did notice about myself with exercising is that if I am able to concentrate better on my breathing only during the first 5 minutes until my lungs open up, I have an easier workout. If the phone rings, doorbell rings, or the dog barks a lot, I have a harder workout. I have to be completely focused.

I know for me it took 2 weeks of working out until I started to have more energy after I worked out. I would be so drained that I thought is it really worth it. It really is. I know it's hard now but give it at most a month. You will feel a big difference. Don't ever give up. Remember to fight CF you always want to be A FEW STEPS AHEAD NOT ON TOP OF.

Thanks girls. How long have each of you been doing your exercise routine and what are your FEV1? (If you don't mind me asking)

Hi Steph,

I've been running for about a year a half now. My FEV1 is 78%. My last hospital admission was February 2004, and the last time I was on antibiotics was April 2005 for strep throat. With my exercising, my A1C went from 6.5 to 5.7. At one point, my A1C was 5.1. I have been able to stop insulin pills and blood sugar draws as long as I continue to work out. Like I said, stick with it!!!

Hi Emilee

Thanks so much for writing in. I had a baby in August and have been on O2 since September. My doctor has also told me he feels I will not get off O2. I have started on my treadmill and feel I am getting stronger as I go. How long after you started on your treadmill did you get off your oxygen. I've always felt that I can get rid of my hose, thanks for letting me know it is possible. Is there anything else you have done to improve your health.

Thanks so much!

No I dont get headaches

I usaully cough a bit before I start my exercise to clear my lungs

I work out 5-6 days a week (Im cautious not to do too much otherwise you can burn out) I find exercise gives me more energy I work 5-6 days a week and I fifnd it actually helps my energy levels

1. swim once or twice a week laps great workout for lungs/mental health
2. weights and 10-15 minute bike ride then weights for 45 minutes 3-4 tiems a week
3. walking/jogging 1-3 times a week
I also try and ride my bike to places instead of using the car just try to be active
I also do physio some days esepcially mornings to clear my chest

Im not sure how much exercise has played a part in my health Im 27 almost 28 havent had acf admission yet my fev is usually between 95-105% only take creon but I do have cfrd diabetes but its controlled.

I am an active person and love fitness and feeling good so its never a chore for me to workout!

hope that info helps

Hi everybody. Actually i just started exercising 1 week ago, i finally got the courage to start and know im really sticking to it! Its worth it. First of all, i strecth.. I don't have a lot of flexibility and feel uncomfortable with it so i spend about an hour or more/day just doing streching exercises. Then i lift weights, they are very light but i just started so i think they should be light.I do it for about 20min a day. I also have a stepper, which i use for 12 minutes/day(sometimes twice a day), in the end of those 12min i feel like i have walked for about an hour, so i guess thats good. Finally I have a bike , one of those you use at home or gym , thats what makes me more tired, from all the stuff i mentioned before. I cycle for 10 min at a time, sometimes twice a day. I dont get headaches from exercising. I normally cough after i exercise because i dont do physio, i replace it with exercising and acapella.
I happen to have gotten a cold yesterday (or a sinus attack, not sure yet) and i feel a bit more tired today and im thinking it could be my body responding to the physical effort ,because i remember , for example, everytime i start working in a new job, after not working for months, i get a bit of a cold then too. But after i feel better i'll go back to exercising! My doctors also told me once that it's ok to get a bit tired and continue to push yourself, but not too much.

Hi Charlene! It took me about 1 year and 4 months before I could go throughout the day without oxygen. IT actually happened after I started taking a product called Ambrotrose from a company called Mannatech. There have been some threads on it titled "glyconutrients" if you want to research more into it. It is kind of pricy but I feel that it is worth it for my health. If you have any questions please feel free to private message me. I am wondering what is the altitude where you live? That has been one of my biggest obstacles as well because I live at 6500 ft. As for Stephanie asking what my FEV1 is it is currently 44 but got up to 54 and my lowest was 18 right before having my baby. I have been doing my exercise routine for nearly 2 years. Good Luck!!! Keep at it. On days that I really feel like I don't want to get up and do it I just tell myself this is 4o minutes out of a 24 hour period. I can do 40 min. to live longer with my beautiful baby and husband. They are absolutley my motivation!!

Do you ever get headaches when you exert yourself? yes
How often do you exercise? light exercise [walking] everyday
How much? depends how im feeling. if i can handle it i will walk for about 30 to 45 mins. if im unwell i can only manage 15 mins.
When do you know you have done enough? i dont know? i guess when it feels like id just be doing more harm than good.
Can you do too much? yes. i have a big problem with getting really sleepy and achey if i do too much. unfortunately it doesnt take alot to get me to that stage. a 30 min+ walk on the beach makes me sleepy and achey for the rest of the day. i end up having to take ibuprofen and caffeine tablets afterwards.
What do you do for exercise? at the moment its just walking. i dont do much in the way of moderate/heavy exercise due to the problems i mentioned before, but i plan on going to the gym once i get my port moved. unsure how i will go there but if i only manage a half hour workout well i guess its better than nothing!
Do you cough a lot during exercise or more afterwards? more afterwards.
