I get headaches every time I work out!...especially if I am careless and don't warm up before I start full on. My friend (who acted as my personal trainor last year) and I couldn't figure it out...I would run on the treadmill or elliptical for 30 minutes and within the first 5 minutes I would get a headache and my face turned really red. Sometimes she would look over and if I started to turn pink she would make me go in the bathroom and put a cold towel on my neck and catch it before the full on headache and then we'd go back to it. I work out around 4 times a week now and still get headaches. I keep meaning to ask about this.
Do you get the headaches too??
Working out is sweet...keep going everyone!

I wonder if the headaches have anything to do with your blood pressure while you are working out? What letsrockcfem said about her face turning red and such reminded me of when my blood pressure was really high after having my daughter. My head felt like it was going to explode and my face would get really red. Something to think about, possibly have checked. Just a thought!

I've been in and out of hospital constantly the past 3 months but really want to get back into exercsiing once i finally get out...i think i'll start slowly and gradually work my way up to going to the gym (i'd be too embarrassed to go now, i'd probably have some kind of attack and collapse!)

what do people think is the best thing to do to slowly get my fitness and lung function back up?

I think headaches can come from an imbalance of C02(too much) and not enough oxgyen Try running up the stairs in school and see how you feel if you suddenly stop. A headache will probably come about. Start off slow and breathe correctly. Inhaling through nose and out through the nose is the best for Co2 problems but it is hard to do when you workout. Try inhaling through nose and out through lips.

I do get headaches when I work out. My O2 level is normal 98 to 99% but I have been checked when I exert myself and it will drop to 93%. My blood pressure is normally pretty low unless I am stressed out. I also wonder if it has something to do with dehydration. I know I do not drink enough water. It may also be from my blood sugar dropping. My blood sugar is never high it is normally in the normal range but has the tendency to drop quickly to abnormally low levels. I see my doctor in a few weeks so I will mention the headaches and share what he has to say. Right now, I and doing my vest for 20 minutes in the morning and night. Around noon, I go to the gym and do 30 minutes on the treadmill averaging 4.2. I can do 2 miles in about 28 minutes. Then I stretch for 15 minutes and do 100 sit ups. I have always been proud of my rock solid stomach. Tonight, I will start with a weight regiment. Light weights for 30-40 minutes. Am I over doing? Thoughts please.

Here are some answers to your questions:

I get headaches quite often. I usually get them cause I'm overexerting myself or just cause of the intesity of my workout. For example, I get headaches more often when I've been running and less when I'm doing the recumbant bike. I think its cause when I'm running, I can tell for me, its much more intense than any other form of excercise. I think it just depends how hard you're working and how that effects your body. I've been working out for years, and this still happens.

I go to the gym 4-5 times a week.

I spend 30 minutes on some sort of cardio machine.... treadmill, bike, elliptical. Then, I do approx. 30 minutes light weight lifting for a particular muscle group each day. Sometimes, I feel the 30 minutes is too much when I get dizzy or weak, but I just trust my body, and when I feel I can't go on, I don't push it.

I know I've done enough cause I have a specific routine I follow that gets my hr up to between 155-180 bpm. Usually, unless I get my hr into the 170-range, I just don't feel like I pushed myself enough. I usually feel absolutely invigorated when I have done enough. I think everyone is different. You just have to follow your body. If you FEEL like you've pushed yourself and are breathing hard and feel stronger, I think you're doing enough. If you don't feel that you're breathing hard and aren't sweating from exerting yourself, you may not have done enough. That's JMO though. Everyone is different.

I know I've done too much when I have that "low blood sugar" feeling. I also know I've done too much if I go over 180 bpm hr when I'm doing cardio. If you can't talk (with some effort) while you're doing cardio, you're working too hard.

You CAN do too much.... I usually can tell right away if I've overdone it cause I'm absolutely "fall over" exhausted. I can barely catch my breath. I also feel really nauseous when I overdo it or I get a headache. These are all signs for me.

I cough most of the time AFTER I excercise hard. I rarely cough while I'm running unless I'm already feeling a little congested when I start. I personally find it worse if I cough while I'm trying to control my breathing while doing cardio. It just messes up my breathing and makes it harder for me to take deep breaths. So, when I'm doing with cardio, I try to cough what I can out. Then, often, when I've done a set of weights, I will cough some if I've really pushed myself and done heavier/harder than usual. Usually, for some reason, when lifting weights, I seem to cough througout alot more than when I run or do other cardio.

I think its great you're starting weights! My docs have always said light weight lifting is great to strengthen chest muscles and just make us stronger to fight off bugs. I usually do a weight that is a challenge, but I can usually do 8-10 reps for 3 sets. You should feel a little strain, but not so much that you can't finish or that you're in severe pain after lifting your set. I'm always sore the day or two after I work a specific muscle group, and that is normal. My husband has trained people and has done weight lifting (much heavier than I) for 10-12 years, and he still gets sore the day or two later. I actually welcome that "stiff" feeling cause then I know I've done it right and I have "proof" I'm getting stronger.... ha ha. I know, I'm weird.

Anyway, good luck on your regimine! You'll do GREAT!!!!

Me again....

I forgot to tell you that my FEV1 about 5 years ago before I started a strict workout routine, was about 53%.... Since then, with working out over the years, I've hovered around 64%! I credit working out, since I haven't done anything else different. Try it and you're likely to see a GREAT improvement.

Does everyone have a specific time of day they work out? How exactly do you fit it into your daily lives? I work from home so I can theoretically work out on my treadmill or do light weights anytime, but I'm also having to balance it with work right in the next room. I find that if I tell myself a certain timel like 8-9am, and if I miss that time, then I don't do any working out because I feel like I've missed "the time" and now I have to work. I think it might be mental for me, just wondering how others get it in their head to do and when.

I ususally feel the best when I work out late in the evening. It doesn't cut into "day-time" errands and such. I also am able to breath better when I go at night (about 9 pm). I have a routine that I eat dinner or have a big snack to tide me over for when I'm at the gym around 7:30 or 8 and then let that settle while I watch TV, do dishes, etc... Then, I go to the gym for about an hour, come home and watch my 10:00 TV shows, take a shower, and then relax until I go to bed around 1 am. The docs have told me, when I've had trouble sleeping, that you should workout about 2 hours prior to going to bed to fall asleep better. They say its cause your body temp warms way up when you excercise and then the cooling of the body is actually a relaxant.... just like taking a bath a couple hours before bed. It does something physiologically and seems to help me a lot with sleeping better and deeper.

My husband is a big motivator. Also, working out at night makes it so its not as easy to find excuses cause there really isn't anything you MUST do at night (errands, work, etc.) cause most things aren't open anyway. Also, I find if I put on my workout clothes early in the day, I am more likely to go. Don't ask me why..... I think it has something to do with the fact that I'm already in my outfit and ready to go, so I feel really guilty getting all ready and then not doing it. I just feel really guilty about that. Like, I was half way to the gym and had the intention to go, yet I let myself down by not going.

Good Luck!

I do cardio around 1pm, an 1 1/2 hours after eating. Then I go lift weight around 5:30 or 6pm. I work full time at a desk job so I think it is good to do airway clearence during the day and right after work. I also do my vest at 6am and 9pm. Does any one work out at a gym? I have a treadmill at home but never use it. I am much more motivated when I go the the gym but I hate the looks I get when I start to cough...probably because I sound like I am dying.
