Explaining a g-tube to a 2 year old

Well we met with the surgeon today and have scheduled the g-tube placement for Alyssa. I'm not happy about it, but I have come to realize that I need to do this for her greatest success against CF.

The surgeon's office had a g-tube baby doll, and I think this is the best way to teach Alyssa and get her used to it, but I have no clue where to buy or how to make one. I'd love any insight or other suggestions from those who've done this or found other ways to explain it.

I'm also wondering if she will be able to do her vest after the surgery. Anyone know?

Is it wrong that I'm praying she'll have gained over a pound for our weight check next week and we can just cancel this thing??

It's so funny because I was praying the same thing. Since school started his teacher has made it a mission of hers to fatten him up for Christmas. Thats kinda how she explains his "special Drinks" that he takes at school. All I could think about the whole 3 hour trip was Dylan gaining weight so he didnt have to go through this. Our hope was shattered when we got there. Even after all our effort he hadnt gained not even 1 pound. Very discouraging thats for sure. At that moment I knew that the feeding tube was the right decision.
As you know we take Dylan to get his on October 10th. With Dylan having his first, I will keep you posted on his progress. Maybe that way it will be a little easier for you. I dont like it just as much as you but we know what is best for our children.

You really will find that getting a g button is a great thing. I really believe and I have seen with our oldest that good weight gain=good lung function. Our oldest son is 8 and has had the button for just over 2 years. We have a 3 year old that was 1 at the time that Mason got his button. I know that we just told him that was where he got his milk through and it helped him to get fatter. Tucker is able to see us set the milk up at night, flush Mason's line after it is hooked to his button and then start the formula.

I know that when we were talking about it the nurse at the CF Clinic actually had a doll. They put an actually button through the hole and showed how it hooked up. I would check with your clinic and see if they have one to show. I would maybe see if they can show you and your child this doll everytime maybe it will stick in your child's mind. I know that there were a lot of questions about the button so if you have any please feel free to ask.

I guess I didn't read through the whole thing before I responded. Yes she will be able to do Vest but it will probably be at a low setting in the beginning and then back to normal soon after. It is not wrong to pray for that one pound to be gained because we did the same thing with Mason. It took him actually getting Strep throat and not being able to get over it for us to really have to say "it's time". I know that we pushed it off longer than we should have and we won't do the same with our youngest. With our youngest they have mentioned it and I am not ready to give in to that yet. Again if you have questions please feel free to ask. Good luck
