Extraordinary Expenses

Yes!! This is exactly what I am looking for!
No matter how small (or big) they may be, and how trivial some may seem, they still add up!

My plan: I want to compile this list to use for awareness and possibly to use for fund raising events. People seem to understand hardships more when you can place a dollar figure on them. (I will share my info once I get it collected)

These are great comments! Keep them coming please!

Hey Faust, want to share your very long list with me?! Shoot me a pm or email if you would rather not post it here! Thanks!

Ditto on the aquaadeks drops $26 and vitamin K (mephyton) $9 per month aren't covered under insurance -- vitamin a & e aren't as pricey. Copays -- because of pulmozyme & tobi we met our out of pocket maximum of $1000 before the end of January -- down to $15 copays per med, but then at least another $140 per month on his regular meds -- zithromax, enzymes, septra, duo neb, etc... Oh and tamiflu is considered a different type of drug, so when I had to fill a prescription for it last week after one of ds's close friends came down with influenza a -- the 10 day supply cost $48 -- had to pay for half the cost of the med instead of the $15 copay.

Oral syringes -- pharmacy only gives out a couple -- with 12-14 meds per day, I ended up buying in bulk -- about 100 in 3-4 different sizes. About $100.

Local medical supply company doesn't carry the neb cups (pari) or compressors needed for DS' meds -- so I tend to order those online and skip having to deal with the hassle of dealing with them and insurance. Our first pari proneb ultra....the company charged our insurance company $365 and it didn't work right to begin with.

CF doctor is 250 miles away, so we usually spend at least one evening over night at a hotel and have to board the dog -- granted we don't HAVE to have a dog but the kennel runs us at least $30 for that time away. Then gas & meals while we're gone. Usually purchase some convenience items for the trip -- prepackaged drinks, snacks, meals..

When we used to go to the local CF clinic, each doctor (3) would submit a bill for the office call, so there was a $20 copay time 3, dieticians are no longer covered under our insurance so 2-4 times a year we'd have to pay $50 for each visit.

Dairy bill is about $50 a month -- whole milk, cream, butter... Carnation instant breakfast -- purchase the powder from sams club. A box of 22 packets costs about $7.50 compared to the grocery store $5 for a package of 10. Go thru a lot of peanut butter, dry roasted peanuts and sunflower nuts -- try to buy in the bulk. And there's the ketchup of course <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Recently purchased an xbox 360 for DS. Granted it's another luxury, but prior to getting it, we were constantly struggling with him to do his treatments 'cuz he'd get bored watching videos, being tied down and wanting to play.

*gas for all them dr. appointments -- not just CF doctor, but sinus dr., lab work, to pick up meds, etc.

*co pays

*(this is just a possibility): gym memberships? i live in an urban environment, so excercise is a non negotiable. better in a gym than running at night for safety purposes

*out of pocket expenses for your shrink to deal with stickier emotional issues that come w/ CF

*the vest. as i understand this can be $12 K or more

*little meds that you need for upkeep of CF stuff to keep symptoms at bay: sinus rinse, sudafed, claritin, etc.

that's about it for me. though it sounds overwhelming, i can handle it. i'm a fighter, and cf is just another challenge for me. it also is a motivator in me trying to get ahead career wise, so i will be in a better position to handle this financially.
