Extreme headache (sinus pain?)

Backstory, I never have sinus problems of any sort, nor many headaches. Last week my sinuses started burning really badly, right in the center of my forehead between my eyebrows. It persisted for about 3 days then went away, it was a distinct burning feeling.

Tonight my forehead has been hurting really, really badly over my left eye. It basically is a dull (not burning) sensation, and feels like a dime width cylinder of pain that goes into my head about 3". It only hurts over my left eye, and hasn't stopped for 4 or 5 hours.

Is this what sinus pain feels like? What could be wrong? If it didn't hurt this bad, I wouldn't have posted, but even after taking my normal pain meds (for another condition) the pain is still easily 8-9 on the pain scale and has not budged one bit, which leads me to believe it's something that can't be helped by pain meds, OR it is too bad to be helped. Any advice? I have a very high tolerance for pain and this is pretty bad.

Could be a sinus infection. Whenever I have had a bad headache similar to what you described, eventually I would end up at the ENT's office and have my sinuses scoped. Sinus CT Scan would confirm or deny an infection. If it is a sinus infection, best to make an appointment with an ENT sooner than later, or the pressure and pain will just get worse. Sometimes Endoscopic Sinus surgery is necessary. Sinus rinses for me have helped me alot after surgery, NeilMed Sinus rinse everyday twice a day works great for me.

Sounds like it could be sinus. Before you can get to a dr, in the meantime, Get you a good sinus wash like the netti pot or something similar.. and maybe even some of those dissolving shower soothers to put in your bath tub. They will help relieve the pressure and pain. I hate sinus headaches! I hope they get better soon!!!

Eek, a sinus scope? That sounds... enjoyable.

The pain went away by itself last night after maybe 6 hours of hurting nonstop. I woke up and feel fine today, maybe nose a little stuffy. I've been doing the sinus rinses off and on... I was doing them religiously for a while then I got a little lax in my compliance. I'll try to start doing them again regularly.

Is it common for sinus infections and headaches to do this start/stop thing with hurting? I hate to go to an ENT and say "well it DID hurt really bad... but it seems ok now..."

Thanks for your advice, I knew you guys would have some tips in this area.
