failed PICC attempts

i've had over 20 picc's and i have lots of scars on my arms, and i'm sure there are scars inside, but no problems putting them in.
it used to be horrible-i was a bad stick. it would take hours and hours, tons of pain and many failed attemps. now, i go to interventional radiology. it takes 10 minutes and i've never had a failed attempt since doing it this way.
everytime i get off the table i want to kiss the surgeon!!

so thats one way to avoid scars. its the best decision i've made.
as far as scarring from attempts-i would agree with what they are telling you. scarring usually is from weeks or months of having this line in you.
bruising is normal. it should only last a few days.

i personally have had an awful experience with the radiology department. this last time was the worst. he numbed my arm in the wrong spot so i felt everything. the picc was about maybe 2 inches from my elbow. i bruise easily, so i normally have a bruise from having a picc placed. what size picc did they put in? this last time they used a 5 french and i think the time before that they used a 4 french. i will definetly will be asking for a 3 french next time i think that will help a lot with feeling it being threaded and what not. i've only had them truely dig for a vein once. i have awful veins by the way. i was a big help huh?

I don't think I have ever heard anyone complain about interventional radiology. Most people like that way of doing it. I just looked it up and we have an interventional radiology team in my hospital.....the trick would be timing things right and scheduling. Why do I have to be such a dang planner and plan for the worst? I am thinking about something that shouldn't concern me until I need a PICC again, which will hopefully be another year plus again. That is why I have no desire to get a port at this point because I tend to be able to go long periods of time without IV's.

So my advice to myself......DEAL with it when the time comes Worst case scenario is that I may have to drive to my bigger center to have a placement just for peace of mind. I am sure they have an awesome team that does that there and I am sure they handle much much tougher veins than I will probably ever have.

I always have to borrow trouble from the future cuz I don't have enough to deal with right now! Thumps head!! Thanks for all the replys....so glad I have a place to ask questions.

yea you do have to schedule in advance to have it placed in radiology. i've done it that way to avoid going into the hospital. the last one i got was the last appt they had. some people were having to wait like 2 weeks to get an appt in the radiology dept. i would just deal with it next time it comes around. but do watch your arm for any signs of infections. and if your arm swells make them do an ultrasound. this is coming from someone who went two weeks with my entire arm swollen, come to find out there was a blood clot in my arm. hopefully nothing else goes wrong with this picc!
