Feeding tube question

i have nothing for you in the liquid not running area...but as far as appetite after the g-tube i've had experience with that. I had my g-tube placed when i was 14 and had it for 8 years. In those 8 years my appetite was severely decreased. I did gain weight because i was getting more calories in. But i completely gave up on breakfast and night time snack.

Having experienced a g-tube, I will tell you that it is really uncomfortable. At least it was for me. I would wake up extremely full and could still almost feel the liquid sloshing around my stomach. So i started speeding up the rate to fit in a can an hour (4 cans) so that i would have 4 hours to digest before I woke up. I still threw up most mornings since when i would get moving and cough, i would throw up whatever was in my stomach. Great way to start the day!

So in general, the tube feedings can have a tendecy to make us feel crappy and sometimes not want to eat. I have to say the happiest day of my life post transplant was the day they took my feeding tube out. I hated that thing.

Even though I hated it, I will say it did give me the boost I needed to gain weight, and if i could do life over again probably would have gotten it placed at a younger age.

Wow thanks for all the replies. I find it interesting that so many kids with the tube don't have an appetite, so their meals decrease even more-- I hate to have my son on just a liquid diet. He never eats breakfast- and I can understand why with 4 cans of milk in his belly for 9 hours straight.

I went out and bought some coke (I am not a coke drinker-- pepsi all the way-- while I sit here with a can in front of me<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">) Anyways, yeah I checked to make sure it was unclamped. I have done that before when I was half asleep. We'll see what the coke does and I'll let you all know. Also if we end up changing out this weekend I will post what happens on that.

Hee HEe, I smiled at your Pepsi preference. Mu husband drinks Coke, I LOVE Pepsi, but we rarely have either in the house. So, when the nurse told us to clear out the tube with Coke, I asked, "Will Pepsi work?" thinking I could score myself a nice fizzy treat. She just looked at me like I had 5 heads and said, "No, Coke." Oh well.

just thought of something else. Do you flush the line with water after each use? If not, you might want to do that to keep it from getting clogged in the first place.
