I got my Mirena IUD placed in early Dec 2009.
I have been on the pill since i was 13 due to really long, irregular periods.
I threw two blood clots with PICC lines in 2009, so logically docs & I decided estrogen-based BC was not a smart idea.
I also have hemoptysis tied to periods to I wanted something that could make my periods less frequent and/or eventually go away completely (Seasonale would have been a great choice had estrogen-based therapies still been a good idea for me).
The copper IUD can cause increased bleeding, which as I mentioned above, was not something I needed.
Mirena has just progesterone, no estrogen, and hormones tend to stay a bit more localized in the uterus versus systemic exposure with the pill - so for many reasons Mirena gives me less chance of clots.
I have never had a child so placement was PAINFUL. But it only lasted for 2-3 seconds while the device was put in, then the pain went right away.
So far I have had 2 light, long periods (2-3 weeks in duration) and hemoptysis associated with both cycles (it's been a very rough year for me with allergies, though, so I'm not connecting the increased hemo to the Mirena).
So all in all, I'm extremely pleased with the Mirena and very glad I did it. I am 5'3 and weigh between 115-120 lbs, so weight isn't an issue for me. In fact I really have to make sure I exercise consistently and watch what I eat (I LOVE SUGAR) to make sure I don't carry extra weight. Some said Mirena might make me gain weight but so far I haven't had a single issue with that.
Let me know if you have anymore questions.
