FEV1

I hate FEV1!!!!!!! A year ago it was 56% and my FVC was 79%. I've started nebulizing Tobi the past few months and my lungs were feeling great! They still do feel great. Yesterday I had an appointment for my workplace and they did a breathing test. My FVC has increased to over 100% but my FEV1 is still EXACTLY the same at 56%! How is this possible? I feel a million times better than I did a year ago but I'm still rated as being exactly the same. And how is it possible to have such a huge difference between these numbers? I'm so frustrated! My next appointment I'm going to ask to go on hypertonic saline to see if that helps. Is there anything else I can do to specifically target increasing my FEV1?

I actually didn't even know my numbers until last Friday when I was at clinic and I asked to see them (for some reason I've never been told). My FEV1 is 35%...I read on a previous thread that below 40% is severe CF. How worried should I be?
I'm with you, I'd like ideas on how to strenghten this number.

The only things I have heard about that seem to increase FEV1, are Pulmozyme, Hypertonic Saline, exercise, increased and more efficient phsyio be it Pep, vest or acapella. Everybody is different, some of the above work for some of the people some of the time. CF is not an exact science unfortunately, good old trial and error.
For myself, Pulmozyme increased my FEV1 from 36% to 52% in just over a month. I have yet to try HS and i only do physio (pep) once a day if that as i usually find i get next to nothing up so can't be bothered doing it more often, we have no vest over here in NZ.
I am now running regularly and will be interested to see if that equates in a further increase in FEV1.
But in all honesty, spirometers can measure FEV1 differently, allergies, your period and your level of anxiety can also all negatively impact your FEV1 reading on any given day. It is at the end of a day a number, one of many numbers that are used to give some indication of disease severity, again it is far from an exact science and if you are feeling great I would try to not worry too much what the numbers say.

I exercise 3 to 4 times a week for 30 mins each time and my FEV1 went from 39% to 59%. I was thrilled with that!

i'm going to have to go with exercise.

and medication compliance (how many of us really do our meds as often as prescribed?).

other than that, CF is a progressive disease.... so you should notice deterioration of FEV1 over time. afterall, it's happened to every other CFer that has been on this planet... so it will happen to you too....

Yep, exercise is the ONLY thing that I've changed that has had a marked improvement on my FEV1. The more intense and regularily I did cardio, the higher my numbers went. Its not an overnight thing though. It took a couple of years for me to see a steady increase.

And, I can't remember a time I've missed a single vest or neb treatment or my meds. I'm really OCD about it all, so I take all my meds and treatments as I should.

Basically, I'm with many on this board in attributing exercise to bringing up my lung health and overall health. Other treatments and meds have come and gone with no change, but exercise is AMAZING!!!
