DS got it last year when he was almost 4 -- looked like someone slapped him in the face and he was a little tired/crankier at the time (just for a day or so), no fever, no other symptoms.

I mentioned it to DS' doctor and he explained that it can cause joint pain in adults.

Thanks everyone!

I get so worried sometimes when it is something new. I couldn't find anything about it and CF combined on the internet.

Once again I am so glad I found this site! Not so urgent calls to the doctor (in their opinion) take so long to get a call back sometimes.

I don't know if I ever had this before or not, but her mother and father had a roofer in the house about 6 weeks ago who was sick (cold/flu symptoms), and about three weeks later all three of us were having bad pains in our joints (ALL OF THEM, everything that bent hurt!) and a stuffy nose, the father and I actually woke up in pain on the same night, feeling like we had been beaten up, and now the baby has this horrible looking rash that doesn't seem to bother her. Pretty interesting, we were wondering where this came from, seeing as she mostly stays home. Maybe we gave it to her.

Marissa is actually running a little warm and having a stuffy nose right now. At least I won't have to be terribly worried if she gets a rash.

You are right though, it does look as if they have been slapped in the face. Terrible looking, I'm so glad it isn't as miserable as it looks.

I just thought I'd add onto this one...my youngest (age 3, no cf) had fifth's a couple months ago. She had a slight cold and then got better, THEN came the rash, fatigue, etc. It was really strange. They said by the time she'd gotten the rash, she'd exposed everyone she came into contact with. The thing with 5ths is we probably come into contact with it a million times and never realize. Point of this novel is that I didn't even get a cold from her, and I do have cf. Drs didn't seem concerned that I was exposed at all, and that's usually the first thing they ask with serious illnesses, is if I've had any symptoms.

Hi Terry,
Andrew had fifths disease when he was three 1/2 years old. All the same syptoms everyone else mentioned. The most prevelent was just an all over lack of energy, crabbiness, wanting to be left alone.

What I did want to add was this..Since Andrew had it, his skin has been much more sensitive to sun and chemicals. I switched over to non-toxic laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, etc. and always always always slather the kids in sunscreen (non-caustic), when we go outside. A dermatologist told us it had nothing to do with with the fifths disease, but I still wonder if that is not true. Just something you may want to remember!
