Fighting to do the vest

Reece has had the vest since he was 1 1/2yrs old. Never had a problem with him putting it on.....until the last 2 weeks! He comes up with ever excuse under the sun. He would rather me do "love pats" (CPT) That as some of you know is sooooo time consuming. I would understand if he was accessed to his port or he something like that, but Im thinking its just the old.... Im 4 yrs old & I want to be in control!!! LOL So should I insist on him doing the vest or should I just be happy that he will let me do "love pats". I've tried bribing & he gets to play video games while doing the vest or watch a DVD, but nothing lately has been working. HELP!!!! Thanks!

I am one that believes that the clinical evidence about the Vest being superior to manual CPT is solid.

So I would do anything, especially with all of his lung problems, to get him to do the Vest.

Your little boy is SO cute! Do you stay with him while he does the vest? If you don't, maybe he likes the contact and attention from you that he gets while you do the postural drainage. I would use any leverage you have to get him to do the vest! It's going to be so crucial as he gets older. My daughter (25 years old) knew that it wasn't an option - I used the idea if giving her a choice of 2 different things. She had, and still has, a strong personality and wanted to feel like she was always in control. I would tell her, for example, 'You can watch your favorite video while you do your treatment or you can read a book with me'. She had to pick one. It usually worked because she felt like she was making the 'big decision'. When she continued to be stubborn, I told her I would have to make the choice for her, which of course she hated, so it forced her to choose!

My son, Jack, is now running away every time I mention it is time to do treatments. Times like tonight I can't convince him, I just have to chase him down and "gently" force him into the vest. Not a lot of fun. I asked Dr. Warwick the same question about cpt vs vest. While I know he invented the vest, he described one of their studies that showed the hydrated mucus in the lungs on some x-ray machine while a mom gave cpt. The mucus only bounced back and forth in the same place only where she was doing cpt and it did not move out of the lung until the child coughed. With the vest the mucus was constantly being moved out of the lungs throughout the entire lungs during the vest treatment. So in his opinion the vest therapy is much better.

I will def do one or the other. He has never gone without. And Amysmom, yes Reece is very stubborn, cuz he can be! He gets to choose where he does the vest either in the liv rm to watch tv or in his playroom where the video games are. And depending on what Im doing, if he asks me to stay with him I do. Tonight it turned into a 1,2,3 match, where when I get to 3 he gets a pop, he did & then he started to cry...but he still wasnt putting on the vest so I said do you want another pop & he said no....& I put the vest on as he was whinning. I dont want that everytime...who does....maybe this is just a fase.

Oh & thanks for the cute complaiment....I think so myself...hehehe

Leah,

My 3 year old son is fighting me on it too. He'll say "I wanna be sick" (no, he doesn't, but he's too young to know). So, I tell him "I'm taking away your video games/movies/whatever works that day" and it USUALLY works. He knows he's not getting out of it, but still fights me every single day! Usually, if someone will play a video game WITH him, he WANTS to do his treatments I guess you just have to find what works for each individual child.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My boy is the same age and also looks for opportunities to flex his authority. I made up my mind not to let these conflicts escalate into fights or to make threats that I either can't follow through with or that would be worse than just skipping the vest and doing manual CPT that time. I've only got a few hours a day with him when I get home from work so I just can't bear spending part of it angry at each other.

Usually what happens when he's in a mood to battle is that we have a verbal back and forth for awhile and I drop it for a half hour or so and play with him; then I just get the gear set up and lay out the vest on his chair in front of the TV (his usual mode of vest treatments) and lead him into it with no further discussion except perhaps telling him something like "what show do you want to watch?" or "we're doing the vest now and after it's done, what do you want for snack/dinner/etc". This works most of the time, but when it doesn't I either wait and try again a bit later or if time is running short I'll chase him down and do manual CPT - which he does not like any more, so most of the time it's enough to convince him to go back to the vest.

good luck.
