Filing for non-profit status

With all this stuff going on about SSI/SSDI lately, I've been thinking more and more about creating a non-profit organization geared towards helping people apply for disability and/or fight their denials (I've actually been considering it for a few years).

I've got a few questions/some feedback if you are so inclined to share your opinions <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
Does anyone know about the non-profit status process? Should I get some assistance from a lawyer?
Do you think there is a "need" for this kind of service?

Any other feedback would be appreciated! Thank you,

Also, not as important, but any suggestions about a good name for the resource and a good website name (something that will be easy to remember, easy to share and relevant)

Hey Julie,

501(c)(3) orgs (nonprofits) are tax exempt, as I'm sure you know. So part of the process depends on where you live, as each state has a process for filing for its tax exemptions. It may be useful to have a lawyer to guide you the process, and it will almost certainly be less time consuming on your end to do so. That said, it's definitely not impossible to go it alone.

Here's a website to check out...pretty simple language and to the point. Make sure to look at all 5 pages (when I first looked at it I thought it was only one, for some reason). I definitely think this type of organization would be appreciated by the CF community. Are you planning on offering "legal" services, though? If so, I would definitely at least consult with a lawyer about the ins and outs of advertising services that could be considered legal or quasi-legal aid.

Good luck! Very cool idea...
