My husband set one up in California, a 501(c)(3) several years ago and it was a couple hundred bucks. It's a lot of paperwork, but he says "it's so easy, even I could do it." His "investors" were from the computer club he was setting it up for. It wasn't anywhere near $1,000. But this was at least 5 years ago. He used the Nolo book for our state, I'm sure there's one for Washington.

You would be soooo awesome at this!!! And, I know a ton of us (IMO) would use your brilliant "expertise" and advocacy for our cases! I think there is a need. Beth would be great, but like others have said, she costs money (as any SSDI attorney does) and that is generally something we CFers don't have much of with our out-of-pocket costs already and to add to it, those of us applying don't get that little "extra".

Another idea would be, is there a way to do it so you would be compensated something for your time/efforts if the person wants to donate? For example, if I win my case and want to donate XYZ to you for your expertise and information, would that change your status (and maybe we, who donate, would be considered your donors??)

I know for things like spybot that you can download for free online, they don't charge, but accept donations from anyone who uses their service. Not sure if those people are then considered donors and fit somewhere into the non-profit status of the organization. Does that make sense? Just an idea though.

I reckon if everyone you helped with their case who won donated say $50 of their first check or two, you may be able to reach that $1000 amount a lot faster, yes?

And, I also think there would maybe be some people on here who haven't been helped (unlikely) by you in some way and yet see what you do for others and still want to "donate"... Could they also be "donors" for your non-profit status??

Good luck! We need people like you!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Sonia, to answer your question, even in "non-profit" status, I believe that if there is enough funding, people can be paid. I'm not sure how it all works, but I'm going to talk to the "owner" of the www.inciid.org organization because in her financial statements (which have to be made public for a non-profit) she does earn a salary for the work she does. Or consider the CF foundation, they have "employees". My mom also works for a non-profit organization but earns a salary. Of course, that's not my main objective in this, but if it ever gets big enough, I suppose paying myself could become an option. I just really enjoy doing this kind of work and I see that there is a huge need for it.

Piper is going to look into the whole "donor" thing and collecting monies before a non-profit status is filed, to see what the rules and laws are. there are also a couple other organizations I could contact to see if they are intersted in donating (places like BEF, CFRI, Elizateth Nash foundation) to see if they are interested in helping the start up.

I will be working on this IRS application over the next few weeks (I can at least fill it out even if I can't file yet).

If anyone has any title/name recommendations and web address recommendations, I welcome them. Any other feedack/recommendations is more than welcome!

In the meantime, for anyone who needs SSI/SSDI help, please PM me on this site or email me at division902@verizon.net If you PM me on this site, I can access/respond all day. I can only access my email from home after about 8pm.
