first bronchoscopy

i had my first bronch to look at a particular region of my lungs that looked "fishy" and to "wash" or lavage it as well about 3 months ago.

aside from me being prepped and ready to go into la la land and my doc being 3 hours LATE for the procedure, so i had to lidocaine TWICE (YUCK!!!), everything went well.

i vaguely remember coughing as doc was saying, "its ok, you're just coughing", but i didn't freak out about it, just coughed. then, it took me a LONG time to come out of conscious sedations and off O2 cause apparently he had to use like 4X what they usually dose patients before i was "under" enough. i don't remember any of that.

i do know about a week after the procedure i ran a low grade fever for about a week and did cough up streaks of bright blood on occasion. i was pretty paranoid about it, but it did eventually get better and the doc did warn me about the fever and blood so i just coped. i really didn't feel back to "normal" until about 2-3 weeks after the procedure. my chest always felt congested and tight, even though i expected a great relief from the lavage. oh well.

anyway, all in all it was a peice of cake, but i found it super odd that in the cultures i'd coughed up for MONTHS, i'd grown MAC and pseudo, but from the cultures they took from the bronch, they did not culture MAC at all. doc said this is likely cause when we cough we can often force out crud from tiny little airways and know how to give a really good sample, whereas when they bronch, they just go to a couple areas and take what they can get at, so not necessarily the best sample as everyone likes to think.

anyway, best of luck! i'm sure it will be no problem! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Thank you all for sharing your experiences with me. I am still very nervous though. I will be admitted tomorrow to start iv antibiotics and then continue at home. If this round of iv's doesn't work and my sputum doesn't show anything but psuedomonas, then I will probably go ahead with the bronchoscopy. My lung ct-scan showed new findings in my lower left lobe and I am coughing constantly. I hope the antibiotics will work because I really don't want a bronch. I'll let you all know if I end up having one.

Thanks again,
Michelle

I was put to sleep during the bronch. I had two. My *only* issue was awaking from the operation, I threw up. That is the only problem, other then that no pain from the bronch. itself.
