First Culture of Staph

I am by no way a doctor and my dd has always cultured staph since 3 mo. But if i were in your shoes, i would try to eradicate it, i mean any bug can potentially cause lung damage, so i would give it a shot. I don't know what the protocol is for this, but i would think that one long course of antibiotics (if that is what needed) would not cause the sensitivities to disappear. At least not in ly experience.

Wishing you the best, whatever you decide

I agree that one course (even a long one) would not affect sensitivities. However, I also doubt that it will truly eradicate more than the lightest growth of anything, even if not all subsequent cultures show it (esp since many kids don't produce the best samples for their cultures.)

Emily recently started hypertonic saline and I love how much mucus she is able to clear when she uses it. Studies have indicated that those who use it have fewer exacerbations, need fewer abx... the increased mucus clearance you get with it hopefully provides a less hospitable environment for all those bugs. It seems to help loosen congestion in her sinuses too, so she nebs it with a mask.

I agree with Missa and Harriett. Hypersal is amazing. My son cultured staph for about a year. When he was congested or sick we always treated with bactrim. Since starting hypersal all of his cultures have been clean. Salt is naturally antibacterial and it gets deep in the alveoli of the lungs.

It's interesting, Catherine. I was talking to two of her drs about it (hypersal)- and both said out of anything they suggest, it's the tx that parents are the most resistant to even *try* for their children!! That's unfortunate.

Thanks everyone. The HTS comments offer so much hope. We were a big fan of hts also, but it seemed to aggitate her already enlarged adenoids and tonsils, so we took her off for a month or two. Well, we started it back up yesterday. It will be a good test to see if the next culture is clean. But with a 4+ for staph on the culture sheet, I am a bit worried.

Andrew always grew staph and periodically grew pseudomonas unti lhe was about 7 years old. Orals usually did the trick in keeping the staph uner control. around age 7 he stopped growing staph and has been pa positive since then. I think there is something to the staph keeping pa down.

As for hts...wonder drug!!! I always sing the praises of hypertonic saline! Aside from Andrew's enzymes, it's the one drug we would not do without! Andrew has had some problems with sensitivity to it,,and has even had some problems wtih hemoptysis. When that happens, he goes off for a few days then starts up again. But for the amount of clean out it provides him, the benefits far outweigh the risks!

Our team did not make any claims to it resulting in Emily having clean cultures... but rather that it reduces the exacerbations that result in needing abx and result in reduced lung function over time. So even if your child continues to culture staph, don't be discouraged and feel like the HTS isn't 'working.' It can still be helping break up mucus, make airway clearance more effective (studies have been done that are posted on the vest company websites indicating that vest therapy results in clearing more sputum when combined with nebbing HTS.) Reducing exacerbations alone is a big, big deal!

Has your child seen an ENT re. the enlarged adenoids and tonsils?
