She had a throat swab. Are they sure where the bacteria is coming from with a throat swab? Lung vs. nose?

Sorry for the confusion! I was referring to the NIH article where they did nasal swabs in healthy kids. With Owen, it was lung sputum culture. I know staph is found in many, many people but I have read that it goes into the lungs of those with health issues. So, if we say it is found in healthy people's nasal swabs but they do not have symptoms, I am not sure you can say it is the same as having it in someone who is not healthy and it is in lungs??
I am just interested in this idea because Staph seems to be a tricky bug affected people differently.

I agree. I think comparing the staph and/or mrsa cultured by a large segment of the general population vs. those with lung disease is comparing apples and oranges. A positive nasal swab in an ASYMPTOMATIC healthy person is an entirely different story from a person who suffers from chronic lung disease and whose respiratory cultures reveal persistent staph colonization that cause repeated illness.

Thanks Harriett. I hope you are getting through the IVs ok. I think I am just still in denial/shock. Started Augmentin 10 day as prescribed by the doctor.

It just amazes me that we went her first 3 years without even knowing about CF or having any symptoms, used hot tubs, let her lick the floors (figuratively of course, etc, etc) and all cultures were clear at first. Now that we started PREVENTATIVE treatments, using hand sanitizer, washing more, etc, she's gotten cold after cold, been hospitalized, had H.Flu and now Staph. It feels like the beginning of the end again for me and it just doesn't add up in my mind...

Thanks for your support.

Ava doesn't have any clinical respiratory involvement yet (no cough etc -- was diagnosed due to GI issues) and she has cultured staph a couple times. She always comes back as normal flora or staph (twice) on throat cultures. Our clinic doesn't throw antibiotics at them for staph unless they are sick and having symptoms. The only time Ava has been on antibiotics was when she had a bad cold a couple months ago and coughing a lot at night. We were concerned about the post nasal drippage into her lungs while she slept so it was a preventative. I would go with your Dr. on this one.

Our basic goal is to boost the boys' immune system.

About a year and a half ago, we went gung ho and eliminated gluten from our diet and most dairy. That is the point where the boys stopped culturing Staph and Ethan Sky also stopped culturing Pseudomonas.

Caleb started on Hypertonic Saline Solution about that time too and I really attribute that to helping keep their lungs healthy.

blessings,
missa

I am by no way a doctor and my dd has always cultured staph since 3 mo. But if i were in your shoes, i would try to eradicate it, i mean any bug can potentially cause lung damage, so i would give it a shot. I don't know what the protocol is for this, but i would think that one long course of antibiotics (if that is what needed) would not cause the sensitivities to disappear. At least not in ly experience.

Wishing you the best, whatever you decide
