First off let me be the first to say that I have tried many different supplements, from a "Well that makes sense, let's me try that". I usually give a supplement 1-2 months of trial period, strictly abiding by the recommended dosage, or an elevated dosage due to CF malabsorption/trial and error and reviewing results. I used to take regular capsule NAC from NSI, totally unaware that the capsule stuff not only may be completely useless, but also possibly harm you due to it's exposure to air (inevitable with capsules).
So I was taking 1800 mg of NAC capsules every day, for maybe 6 months or longer. I noticed a very slight improvement in my mucous viscosity, but I mean very slight. I wondered why something with such a supposed very strong anti inflammatory trait would still leave me with obvious inflammation issues, even after such a while being on it. Thanks to Sak, now I know why. I was basically taking a an almost worthless placebo.
Well today I started taking my PharmaNAC (the airtight specially formulated one). After my first dose, I almost felt high, it was a very weird sensation. Not really lightheadedness, just an odd somewhat floating feeling...I suppose as close as I can describe it, it's slightly similar to coming out of surgery, when they put you under...Right before you are 100% back to normal mind wise.
I was at the gym lifting after my first dose, and I was actually laughing at how I felt. Second dose around 9pm did the same thing. Aside from the very slight loopiness, it felt (to me anyways) the internal non respiratory version of taking a breath of cold air, swooshing around inside me for a bit.
I know this sounds very weird, but i'm just trying to describe the sensation. After my second dose, I kid you not, I did feel better. Granted I am generally healthy now with the exception of some occasional bleeds, but I still cough up a good deal of goo. My lungs felt less constricted, and more "open".
You know how when you do hypertonic inhalation you almost immediately get a sputum expectorant response? Picture the same thing with this NAC, but instead of coughing stuff up, it was a sweeping "I feel better lung wise" sensation. I'm not sure if others will feel the same way, but I read Sak's blog, and she stated something similar. Very eary in the dosing, and notably feeling an immediate positive impact.
There was a somewhat similar experience when I was REALLY sick when I got back from the hospital, and I started OO under the tongue. I could immediately tell it was doing something in my body (killing bugs off), but OO took about two days of heavy dosing before I really started to feel it. This NAC was much quicker. Like if you have a real mean headache, and you take 4 high dose ibuprofen all at once.
I initially didn't want to pay the fairly steep cost of 3 doses a day for a months supply. I purchased enough for 2 doses a day, for a months supply. I'm going to bite the bullet and spend enough to stay at 3 a day. I read up some on Stanford's study on the stuff, and it's pretty amazing what they are finding out about the stuff, and what a profound change it's having in patients. The explanation of what exactly is happening makes perfect sense as well, and I will admit I wasn't 100% aware of exactly what was taking place. This probably won't be as corrective towards our disease as say insulin is for diabetics, but it seems that this holds promise to drastically slow down our inflammation problems, and overall pulmonary CF symptoms.
As Sak said, while this is still preliminary, and the jury isn't fully back in on this, all preliminary data suggest this is a must do regimen for every CF patient. I'm doing 3*900mg a day, because I heard the Stanford study was doing the same amount. I didn't want to try and evaluate something at a weakened dose and then think something didn't work.
If you are interested, you can search around the net for sources of the stuff, and I found a source for as low as 11 bucks for 20 tabs. Also, on a similar note, doing this NAC treatment + strict adherance to the vest and other nebs + good multivitamins and other strong antioxidant supplements + that new drug to help our ion transport coming out in 07, it's very possible that you can be very healthy, and live longer. As I said, it's extremely early, and i'm not putting my gold seal on this yet like I have OO, but I instantly felt better lung/body wise after just my first or second dose. I recommend all of us give it a shot.
