First time in hospital?

How old were you or your little one when you were admitted into the hospital for the first time (CF-related)? How long was your/their first stay and why were you admitted? Are you ever given a PICC line and sent straight home (providing you know how to maintain one)...do CF doctors generally try to keep CFers out of the hospital during treatment due to the chance of acquiring various bacterial infections? How are CPTs or general respiratory therapy different while hospitalized?

9 when I was 1st admitted. Which is why I find it weird people say "oh my kid has mild CF or atypical or even "two mutations" but no symptoms yet . Ask a lot of the adults on this forum - many of us didn't have any symptoms for years..... it's progressive!!!!!

Admitted for 14 days. No home IV's.

Many docs try to keep kids in patient because they are able to rest more. Rest is almost as important as antibiotics. Parents/patients say they rest at home, but hospital is still more restful.

Hope this helps...

I was 23 when I was in for the 1st time with pneumonia. That time i was in for 3 days and sent home with a PICC. I recently had my second exacerbation and went in for a PICC placement and right back home.

I dont know if my response really counts since it was so long ago.

I was admitted for the first time within 2 years of my diagnosis at our local hospital for 10 days. We didnt do picc lines then. We had the old, terrible perephreal iv's that blew every other day.

When admitted to our local hospital I didnt get the CPT needed so eventually when admissions were required I went to our CF clinic which is 3 hours away.

For ME, the manual, aggressive CPT in the hospital is just as important as iv's for the first 2 weeks. Once stable I go home on iv's & return to using my vest. My first time with a picc line & home iv's was in 1/2000.

There are many patients/doctors that try to avoid the hospital as much as possible, but my doctor & I agree that for ME those 2 weeks in the beginning is essential to jump start my recovery.

If sent home on iv's....you will have a home agency of some sort come & give you an inservice, draw bloods etc depending on the meds etc. You wont be sent home to flounder like a fish out of water.
