I always get my son who has cf his shot as soon as it is available in Oct. It takes two weeks after the shot is given to be fully immunized against it. I also get his sister one who is in daycare a shot to hopefully keep her from bringing the flu home to him. I would say if it is available get it now before their becomes a shortage and you don't get one.

Argh! Just got a call from DS's local clinic. We'd postponed a visit to the local CF clinic last month, but I indicated I wanted to make sure DS got a flu shot this year since there was some miscommunication regarding them last year and he wasn't able to get one locally. The nurse told me to call the main peds clinic because they have gotten the vaccine in and are giving shots.

So I call to peds clinic to make an appointment, explained DS was considered high risk because of his cf -- Sorry, they aren't giving out shots yet. Well they're giving them to a select few -- high risk patients. HELLO?!! DS is considered high risk. Sorry, call back in a few weeks... Banging head against wall....

Called the CF clinic in the City and while they do have the vaccine available, the doctor prefers waiting until the end of October, beginning of November so the vaccine gets them thru the flu season --- UNLESS, an early outbreak hits, then they'll rethink things. So far no flu cases have hit the area, usually starts around Thanksgiving when more people travel, visiting relatives....

Told my husband about the run around I got when I called the clinic to inquire about flu shots. So he called and he got the same snippy receptionist. He kept stressing that the nurse at the CF clinic TOLD us there were flu shots available, that DS IS considered high risk because of CF. She got argumentative and raged about of the local CF clinic nurse had no RIGHT to tell patients they had flu shots available. She said they're giving flu shots out, but only to "certain people". So DH stressed again that DS was considered high risk and asked what types of patients are getting them, what is the criteria for "high risk". She then changed her tune and said, Only people with certain insurance ---- GRRRRRR! So he asked to speak with a nurse who tried the same song and dance. Then she admitted they were giving flu shots out to high risk patients and scheduled an appointment for a nurse visit in a week and a half.

I get sooo frustated when dealing with the clinic support staff. We had to fight to get DS his synagis shots for RSV -- we were also told he wasn't high risk. Every year we have fought to get a flu shot for him. The first year he was supposed to get two as an infant. I was told the 2nd shot wasn't available because they were saving it for high risk patients. Every single year it's been a struggle just to get him vaccinated.

I am getting my shot on Saturday, October 7th. If you are willing to search, you can get one now, but you'll have to call around to find who offers the shots. Usually public health clinics have it offered at different times and locations.

I would very much like one of those Thymerasol free (mercury free) flu shots. I hear 20% of the national inventory is mercury free, but they are still difficult to find and oddly many have no idea that there is a mercury free offering.

I am getting the regular one anyway. I don't think it is too smart to wait too long. Besides I could be searching for the mercury free version for weeks, only to find out they are all gone.

Best of luck,
Grendel
