I had to quit taking the pill because it was causing me liver problems.

If you are planning on starting a family in a couple years, you might want to go with a nonhormonal bc, to let your body get back in the swing of things, so to speak <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">.

Btw, we don't use birth control due to having it built in, apparently <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> .

I tried the pill for a little while about 5 years ago. I learned that its effectiveness was decreased by the other medications I was on. Also, I have to wonder if since absorption issues are present in CFers, if we really get the full benefit of anything we take in pill form.

Problems I experienced with the pill were that it 'reversed' my cycle. I bled for 3 weeks with a 1 week break in between. Yuck! The hormones also made me exceptionally, um, hysterical, shall we say?

I now have an IUD, and have liked it. The bad rep that Mel was refering to was nearly 40 years ago. They've come a long way since then. There are two types--with hormones and without. Mine is copper and is w/o hormones. I haven't had any problems with it.

As far as tying tubes, I also considered that since my husband and I do not intend to be parents. However, I do not do well with anesthesia, and that's a big surgery for a woman. My husband (whom I think should be nominated for man of the year for the way he takes care of me and deals with CF with me) is going to have a vasectomy in a few weeks.

Another family planning idea is to use spermicidal vaginal inserts. They're very effective, and much more conducive to maintaining "the mood" than condoms.

I'm kind of in the same situation as you Sarah because we would like to try for a baby in a year or two also. When I'm on antibiotics that will effect the pill we use a condom also otherwise we are good to go. Not everything I take lessens the effects of the pill so if you just read the inserts it will tell you if it does. Just letting you know how I do the baby control thing! Hope it helps some!

It made me mood swing so much that I wasn't myself at all. I was crazy every day. Then, I went on a BC with lower hormone levels-Yaz. It has worked well so far; it definitely doesn't make me crazy like ortho-tricyclin. Another option is the ring. I know people who use that and really like it.

I was on the shot in high school, and the only complaint I had is that it (in combination with my anti-depressants) made me gain 50 lbs in a year (though some CFers would welcome that).

My sister is on the Nuva Ring, and I know nothing about it, but I'm pretty sure she likes it.

Mine was the opposite! The low-dose pill gave me horrible mood swings. I am generally very happy and I was constantly bursting into tears for no reason. When I switched to a higher dosage, I was fine.
