Forgetful flushes

When Garran got his Port they gave us this long speech and extensive paperwork about how his Port could get a clot and that it needed to get flushed regularly etc....that was my biggest fear.

My question was, if there was a clot, would every month be enough? But apparently it is.

We have actually gone about a month and a half and he has been fine, we didnt even realize it was so late. The home health services place said that they had scheduled that time in.

He has a home health nurse come out each month to access it and flush it, but she is going to show me how and I am going to start accessing it and flushing it each month and they will just come out when it is time for IV antibiotics. which is every 2 months.

That way if something does happen and he starts to show some of the signs on the paper work they gave us we have all the stuff we need here to help him till we can get to the hospital. Or if he has an allergic reaction etc... blah blah blah...Anyway. It might do you good to learn to access it?

That could just be me, talking out my butt again, I am good at that <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Good luck!

Here's one example of a time I forgot to flush on time. <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://livingwellwithcf.blogspot.com/search?q=superstitious">Almost Enough to Make Me Superstitious</a>

Nothing bad happened, but even so, it was a wake up call.

I always do my flush on the 1st. To help me remember, I also change the filter in my aquarium on the 1st.

Routine and consistency is SO important with CF. I'm glad there weren't any problems with the port. Remember too though, that we can be as diligent as possible and things still can go wrong. When that happens, if you've been doing as best you can, you have no reason to blame yourself.

If your daughter has had the port for so long, it might be worth your while to see if a nurse can train you how to do the flushes. Maybe the first few times you could do it at the dr's office just in case.

My mom learned to flush it for me as soon as I got it. Eventually I learned too. It saves SO much time to be able to do it on my own. It's one less appointment I need to shuttle myself to and from.

Good luck!

I would love to learn to access it myself, It would be much easier than having to go up to the hospital every month.

But we live in Australia and they wouldn't let us do that here.

Kj has never even had iv's at home and when I inquired for that we were shown a special bottle that she could lug around with her 24 hrs a day and a home health nurse would top it up every 24 hours. But it could only have one drug in it (tobra) and Kj was needing 2 iv drugs (meropenem and tobra) SO we decided that she needs the benefits of 2 drugs and not one. Plus with going into hospital she could be disconnected after every iv.

Also I was never given any paperwork when Kj got her port in. We were just given the basic information on it via the docs mouth <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">
