Four pounds under the weight requirement

I haven't transplanted yet, but I had a feeding tube put in in March b/c my doctor said I didn't weigh enough. They always tell me it's about the BMI as well. I don't know what my BMI is now though. I do know that I was about 115 when this all started. I'm 5'6 and my doc said she wants me at AT LEAST 140. My doctor and I have fought about weight for a long time. She wants me up, I want me down. So... I've been trying the tube feeds (with limited success) and trying to eat more to satisfy the transplant docs. I know how hard it can be. So, I feel for you!

Don't only try to mix w/your feedings, but with regular meals too. They told me to add extra everything - butter, cheese, powdered milk. Also, try to drink Ensure. I only drink chocolate b/c that's the only flavor I like. However, there are a ton of flavors. There is always weight gainer protein powder as well. Just a few thoughts.

When I was listed I weighed about 108lbs. I am 5'7". My transplant docs were not happy with my weight but were willing to see past that because I had been stable at 108lbs for several years. My weight wasn't just dropping or fluctuating really badly. I also did not have a feeding tube that was one bullet I was able to dodge.

My transplant team listed me and told me that they wanted me to try and gain weight while waiting. I ended up gaining about 12 lbs in the 6 weeks I was listed. Most of that I gained in about 3 weeks though.

For me I started eating about an hour before I would go to bed. I pretty much would just have an orange/banana/apple and a bowl of cereal mostly Captn Crunch with Crunch Berries. I ended up gaining weight after I started doing that. I would say try to eat something before you go to bed. You aren't really burning the calories that way. Yes you may burn some while you sleep just breathing but most likely you won't be breathing as hard as when you are active througout the day and coughing and such.

I just mention this because I know it really helped me alot. Other than that I ate whenever I got hungry. I would snack throughout the day because I couldn't just sit down and eat a big meal. I would eat and snack all day long and those two things had me going into my transplant weighing 118lbs after I dropped too about 105 from getting sick after my evaluation.

Best of Luck with the weight gain!

JuliePie, That is insane that your center is delaying your being listed due to the fact that you are 4 lbs under the weight they want you to be. It seems like centers are getting more and more ridiculous with their requirements these days.

I was once severely underweight (long story) and had a g tube also. I did my feedings at night and then ate as much as i could during the day which wasn't a lot. Breathing takes up calories and when you are out of breath and its harder for you to breathe, the more calories you lose because your body is struggling to compensate.

lately Since I've been listed this time around, (it's been 8 months yesterday) I've gained like 10 lbs. It's ridiculous. Let me give you some of my weight!!!! The transplant dr.'s say that I look great but, because I"m used to being so skinny, i feel like a fat slob. lol

Anyway, just eat a lot of junk food. That's what I do. Eat 3 meals a day, and snacks in between. And eat late at night too if you are hungry. I think those are things that put all this weight on me. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Good luck!
