Freaking Out Over Clinic Visit....Help

I would be freaked out as well. I think if I were in your position I would push for something new. We've been on the fence about adding HTS but I would start it in a minute if Lili's numbers were slipping.

Lili went to an ENT a couple of years ago because she had a chronic cough. Although she didn't have pollups she did have a lot of junk in her sinuses that was causing the cough. She's been on Flonase for 2 years now and only coughs when she is sick.

The polyps must be protruding from his sinus cavities since they can tell he has them, right? My daughter is almost 6 wcf now. She had sinus surgery at 4.5 years old bc she was having chronic sinus infections. We found out during the surgery that he cavities were buldging from infection and polyps. One cavity was almost completely filled with a huge polyp. Unfortunately we weren't able to see the polyps ahead of time bc they weren't protruding into her nose. Anyway, I agree with a nasal spray. My daughter takes Nasonex bc it helps shrink polyps. I have been wondering if hers are growning back though bc she has been complaining of headaches lately. It is just hard to know, maybe an adult here can tell us what they felt like with polyps. If I were you, I would set up an appointment with an ENT now just to get that established so that if he does start having sinus trouble you can get it taken care of easily.

About the pft's, it can take a long time to get the technique down. I am suprised that they would take his first ones very seriously. My daughter practiced with those birthday blowers, the kind that roll up then pop out when you blow. It is really similar to the pft technique. We would have her try to hit our nose and keep it on our nose as long as she could. She loved that and she has been able to blow great pfts since.

i second the party blowers. you and your kid can actually see that he is blowing out. it takes a lot of practice for anybody to know what they are doing with the PFTs. it takes a good RT too.

blessings,
missa

PFTs are hard to learn how to do right - try pinching your nose shut and blowing up a balloon and see what happens if you try to swallow or cough during it!

My son's CF doc had him do them just for practice for several visits at that age before she started factoring them into her opinions. She relied far more on what she heard and our reports of his health. Also, some of the technicians are better than others at getting kids to do a good job.

My son's doc was also not much of a believer in hypertonic saline but after a bad year, we finally convinced her to let him give it a try before sending him in for another admission. It worked and she now credits it with being an important part of his health maintenance.
