I actually was looking to transfer to another doctor because I was unsatisfied with my pediatric doctor. So when I found out the new doctor was only seeing patients under the age of 16 I was pissed off. But, I transfered to see the adult doctor and it probably was the best decision for me. I love him. I think having a new doctor on my case made every aspect of my CF new and aware to him. not just the same old same old, yea yea yea BS from the old doctor. He really took the time to study my case, and get to know me and my CF.

Yes, it's scary transitioning, but I think good can come out of it. But you DO have to advocate for yourself, that's why I wanted to change in the first place, my old doctor wasn't listening to me. I'm moving soon, so will have to start over again at another adult CF clinic, and we'll see how it goes. My doctor told me the most important thing to do is build a relationship with your new doctor. Get him to like you, and then he will care, and then you will receive the best treatment and care possible.

So, although it's reallly really frustrating and annoying give it a chance, maybe think of it as a new slate? I hope this helped a little bit.

Methodist Hospital Houston Texas has an excellant adult unit. They started it about 12 years ago. My son was then 27 and had been at Texas Childrens for 6yrs (diagnoised at 21) He was one of the first in the adult unit. They now have 150 adult (18) and up CF patients. Dr. Katz and her team have a very good reputation. I'm so sorry you have had such a rough time. I will keep you in my
thoughts and prayers.

I switched to the adult team last year. It was hell. I got really depressed when I was admitted. My Dr. wasn't a kids Dr. and he doesn't have a great bedside manner haha, but he's still a great Dr. I slept the whole time I was there pretty much, lost even more weight when I was in there then out (6 lbs in 5 days), and couldn't have passses to go out like my old hospital. I got use to it but it kinda sucked. I had a nurse cordinator come in and ask me things about what I thought of the transition and advice I'd have for newcomers. I couldn't really think of any advice other then to say it's going to be a total different experience and to expect to start over again.

I don't know any CF Dr's out in L.A. but I'm sure you'll be able to find a great one, I know they have a lot of CF specialist. Good luck with the move and finding a new Dr.

I know it must be hard to switch from peds to adults.. I just recently switched clinics..adult to adult but it was still a switch..

I was so nervous about it, I almost cancelled my appointment so many times.. I didn't think anyone was going to know me the way my old clinic did. How was I going to get them to know me, know my quirks, my fears, insecurities... my lungs which are not typical CF lungs?

I was so scared.. but I did it and I have to say I am so in love with my new clinic... they are amazing, they have taught me new things, done new things for me... and they are so good at focusing on adult CF issues...

In the brief time I have seen them, including one admission I already trust them with my life.. so while the jump my be scary and the in between process and the not knowing can be scary.. hopefully once you reach your new destination the team will make you feel as safe and comfortable as my new team made me feel

Good luck,
Jennifer
