G-Tube/Mic Key

well...it so funny to hear so many different recommendations about the same thing from different doctors,etc!! no wonder we come here looking for answers!! lol... here's my doc's 2cents worth... my daughter has been on gtube for 10 months, the balloon has ruptured 4 times!!! yes 4!! (waking up to the smell of formula and stomach acid all thru her bed and all over her, because the feeding tube keeps on pumping all nite and she doesnt move a muscle, yuck!!) they think this is due to the prevacid she is taking???? so they recommend to me to change the button every month (as my insurance allows a new button to be delivered each month)...but this could definatley be case specific due to the large amt of prevacid my daughter is on. i do know that i also have to check the water levels in the balloon pretty frequently. anyway....there it is.

The GI we see now wrote the script for a new one every 6 months, but told us we could keep it in for up to a year if we wanted.We do absolutely nothing special for the g-tube site. Not even making sure it gets cleaned with soap and water every day. If it happens to get hit by the water in the shower, then it's good enough for me. Every doctor we see is always commenting on how good his site looks too. I guess part of that could be that he isn't playing with the tube or running around to where it would get caught on things??

Ricki, why are you still using a balloon style button if they keep bursting??

Demand they put in a "Bard" button, it does not have a balloon and can stay in indefinately. There is no excuse to be going through that many buttons and having the risk of them rupturing.

The Bard does have to be put in 'in-office' but once it is in, it is there for as long as they leave it. Instead of a balloon it has a flange on the back to hold it in place. I've heard inserting hurts a few minutes but some numbing cream or pain meds takes care of it.
