g-tube questions

My 3 month old just got a g-tube placed last week. They have us use sterile water to flush it, or to prepar the formula. Is this something we need to do forever, or just because it is new?

Also, I noticed she digests very slowly. I've always suspected it but now I have proof. A few times I used the decompression tube 3.5 hours after eating and formula backed up into it. There shouldn't be formula in her tummy that long after feeding should there? I wonder if that causes her severe reflux and gassiness.

I have never heard of using sterile water for a g-tube.

The g-tube goes directly into the stomach; you should be able to use clean drinking water. IE if you would use it to mix formula for her to drink in a bottle, use it for the g-tube.

Likewise, flushing is just to clear the line. Don't use toilet water (duh) but normal drinking water should be fine, IMHO.

As for the slow digestion, this doesn't sound correct; but I'd check with your GI for confirmation if it is anything to be worried about.

That's what I thought. I didn't boil water for formula, I do have a reverse osmosis water filter though. But they are having me use sterile water. I thoguht maybe just because its still fresh.

I'm going to talk to the doc about the digestion tomorrow

No, it won't be forever. It might be just because she's so young that they are telling you to do that. We were never told to use sterile water at all, but my son was much older when he got the g-tube.
