gallbladder

I never really knew CFers had problems with their gallbladder. I am not having any problems. I was just wondering how you all knew you were having stones or knew that you needed it removed? I am just curious. For those of you who have had a tx, was it recommended that you get it removed? Also, I had my appendix removed years ago, would they have taken out my gallbladder then? I really have no clue about this one.

I had mine removed - emergency surgery - about 15 years ago. Before I knew I had CF. I was doubled over in massive pain. It was completely plugged up. When the doc did the surgery he said it was massively infected and on the verge of rupturing. It was pretty obvious something was wrong. Leading up to it - the weekend before after a heavy Chinese meal I had stomach cramps, but they cleared up. I was pretty careful eating all weak - avoiding fatty stuff or I had cramps. Then whammo one week later into the ER and off to surgery. BTW< the gallbladder pain was far worse than labor! ~J

For me, it was the worst stabbing, gripping pain I can remember having- well, maybe pancreatitis is similar...gah.

The pains started in my stomach area (as opposed to abdomen) and would go all the way through/around to my back and were pretty much incapacitating (sp?). The amount of pain would vary though, depending on how bad that particular attack was. I don't know about them taking out your gallbladder with your appendix, but since they opened me up all the way and cleaned out adhesions (after they told me it was going to be laproscopic- don't get me started <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0"> ), they did take out my appendix at the same time as my gallbladder.

I have gallstones, but have not had symptoms. I'm hoping when I get a transplant, I can just ask them to remove it while they're "in there", haha. To me, it makes sense, as why leave that in there when there's a chance it could become infected and cause problems post tx? Anyway, I'm curious to see what others say about this.

Oh, and it is possible they just took out your gallbladder at the same time. I had stomach surgery 6 years ago, and I get asked all the time if they took out my gallbladder already. NOPE. Damn it, haha.
