Garlic - blood thinner?

So I've been eating a lot of garlic lately - like a clove or two a day because I love it so much, and it seems to clear my lungs out i.e. loosens my mucus. HOwever, since eating it on a regular basis for the past 3-4 days, I've started to cough up blood. I know that Oregano is a blood thinner, but I'm wondering if Garlic is too? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Garlic

Possible Harmful Interaction

The herb garlic (Allium sativum) is taken to lower cholesterol, among many other proposed uses.

One of the possible side effects of garlic is an increased tendency to bleed. 16,17 This blood-thinning effect has been demonstrated in a double-blind trial of garlic in 60 volunteers, 18 as well as in other studies 19,20 and a case report. 21

According to two other case reports, the blood-thinning effects of warfarin were greatly enhanced in individuals taking garlic. 22 This could amplify the risk of bleeding problems.

Based on these findings, you should avoid combining garlic and warfarin except under a physician's supervision.

A blood thinner. It has nothing to do with you but Garlic in general can thin the blood. I would NOT take garlic before having any type of surgery or having your teeth cleaned.

Good to know. I thought that the garlic might have been causing the bleeding, but I wasn't entirely too sure. It makes sense though, because I had a clove about an hour ago, and then a half hour after that I was coughing up blood. Thanks Risa!

My boyfriend will be happy that I won't be eating it now. He keeps complaining that I'm smelling like it. LOL - I couldn't help it though, garlic is soooo good!

I also read that vitamin E can have the same effect, and also green tea can thin the blood as well.

check out this link on herbs that interact with glucose levels. Very interesting.

I met this lady who swore by bitter melon.
If anyone decides to take any of these herbs consult with your doctor as if you are already on insulin you are probably going to need to lower the dose. Read the disclaimer on this link. It can be dangerous in excesss or if you take a preparation like garlic pills or anything that is related.
read on

Tons of herbs are antiplatelets, Garlic is just one of them. You can still eat/take garlic to help your body but do you use a vitamin K supplement? It helps quite a bit to counter the problem.
