Hi there. Your assumption about delayed emptying giving you more time to absorb nutrients makes logical sense, but it's incorrect. The stomach is what breaks down the food, and then it goes on past the pancreas which secretes enzymes that are supposed to help you absorb the nutrients from your food. Digestion and absorption are two different processes in the body.
When emptying is delayed, you actually get LESS benefit from your enzymes because they have already been absorbed into your bloodstream thanks to the walls of the small intestine.
AmyR is right about the reflux problems that could be occurring. The more that stomach acid churns around, the greater the risk of it eating at your esophagus or your stomach lining. That could result in an ulcer. Another problem with reflux is that if you accidentally breathe it (like if you're coughing while you have reflux and you swallow it in the "wrong pipe" you could burn your lungs.)
