I'm due to get my wisdom teeth out in two weeks under GA. Anyone else had this done? Anything I should be concerned about re: the GA? Do they put you on a vent for it? I have no idea...

I had conscious sedation (which I have since come to really enjoy!! Versed and Fentanyl are the drugs I think). Did they tell you why you need general? I think that is the normal protocol but my cf doctor disagreed and said if it was mandatory it would have to be done in hospital (in case of a respiratory emergency). So the oral surgeon did it while I was conscious in an oral medical center (not hospital) and it went just fine.

My FEV1 at the time was 76% and yes general does require venting I do believe. I had my gallbladder out in '04 (FEV1 low 70s) and I was vented and extubated just fine. I was a little hoarse for a couple days though.

Yea I not exactly sure what GA is either? I have done all my teeth work w/ wisdoms and extractions under conscious sedation... the drugs that make you barely out of it, and so you dont remember anything. I think I may have had it for my g-tube placement and Im not sure if I was actually vented (is that right?) I didnt have much pain in my throat even w/ the tube for the g-tube being down my throat. I have never remembered anything from my g-tube, to my port, to my wisdom teeth removal etc. and I dont think I was vented for any of it and I was around 40-45% FEV1 when I had that all done.

I had mine pulled about 2 years ago with no sedation of any kind and only local numbing in the areas. It was not the most pleasant thing but it was not to bad either. You just hear a lot of cracking and breaking of the teeth and your head is getting jarred around a bit while they work in there. I have low lung function in the 30's so any kind of sedation makes me nervous so I toughed it out for the 5 minutes or so it took to actually get them out.

This doesn't seem right to me. I've had some pretty extensive dental work done, including some really ugly extractions, all under consious sedation as others have mentioned. (Where basically, you are asleep and won't feel or remember anything, yet you are still breathing on your own.) I also recently had surgery on my achilles tendon without requiring general anesthesia -- they can do some pretty amazing things without having to put you completely under, so it's odd to me your dentist would want to do this.

I always look forward to being sedated.

I had to get gall stones taken out and was put under conscious sedation. Versed (midazolam) and Demerol (meperidine). I remember feeling the sting of the demerol going up my arm, then they gave me the versed which was like having a bomb go off in my brain. *Poof* Best sleep I had in ages. The only thing I remember is seeing the speculum as they got ready to stick whatever down my throat.
