Getting O2 during exericse...

I'm trying to figure out if I need O2 when I'm exercising. I'm asking for it, b/c I have a little pulse ox machine at home and it says I go to 90% when I exert myself. I don't totally trust this gadget though and am concerned I might go lower then 90%. So I'm asking for an exercise desaturation test to find out exactly what goes on.

Everyone is acting surprised by my inquiries and one of the people who give the test said she's never had a CF person ask to do the full 2 hour exercise test before.

I'm wondering, how did any of you determine that you need O2 during exericse and not 24/7? What were your symptoms to make you realize you needed it during your workouts? Have you ever taken this 2-hour test? The 6 minute walking test on the treadmill would not be enough, so I want something more intense then that for testing, b/c at home I am trying to focus on pushing myself.

When I started using oxygen at night I started to wonder if my extreme fatigue while walking was related to low O2. I just used the O2 concentrator while I was walking on the treadmill one day and I noticed I didn't get that fatigued. My legs were still strong - whereas without the O2 I felt like my legs were going to fall off.

I had a 6 minute walk when I went for transplant evaluation but other than that I basically started using the O2 for exertion when I started using it at night.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Take Care,
Lindsey

Yeah i'm the same at night. A good test for me was when i did physio w/o it in the morning, and i'd be exhausted right after, so after waking up I kept my O2 on while i did physio and it made a world of difference. It's actually shocking how much O2 affects you until you've got low levels.

Lindsey and Bree, how did you determine you needed O2 at night? How did you know in order to ask your doctors? And what did your doctors need to know for them to be sure?
