GI consult set for Thursday

hey Tami,

I am 20yrs old with CF and I had a gtube put in in 4th grade until my senior year of high school. I never got an infection and played soccer and cheerleaded with it.I was gaining the weight on my own so I took it out in 5/05. this past winter i had a horrible time with losing weight so in may I had it put back in. Its not uncomfortable and you get so used to it you forget its there most of the time. it really is the best thing. you feel better with the weight back on and are able to fight infection better. like all things it just takes time to get used to it.

Hope I was somewhat of a help,

Kayla

Hey Tami,
I've been where you are and all I can say is (((hugs to you))).

Making the decision is the hard part, really. It is one of those CF checkpoints that you don't want to pass. Please PM me, email or call- whatever you need. I'll be so happy to help if I can.

Our decision was made in the midst of other health crises, so we were already emotionally spent. We realized its not the end of the world. Even though it might seem to represent a failure, it really is just another proactive way we can help our kids do the best they can.

In the past three years we neither boy has had an infection, although Josh had some granulation tissue around the site at first (easily fixed). He also has had his tube surgically replaced due to a broken end cap. Also fairly easy to fix.

As far as appetite, it takes a while for their stomachs to get used to the quality being pumped in overnight. At first there is a lot of "tweaking". Both boys threw up in the first week, but we were able to regulate number of cans over how many hours, kind of formula etc. My boys tend not to eat in the morning because they feel full, but later in the day their appetite is normal.

Its amazing how they adjust and how we adjust to the new routine.

Like I said Tami, hugs to you!

Tami,

I don't have too much to add, I hope the GI appointment goes well. Sounds like the questions you listed in your post are good ones. We are going for maggie's annual CF appointment in the city on Thursday, too. The day before I get nerved up and usually feel stressed til culture reports come back. I'll be thinking of you on Thursday.

Hi Tami, I know this is so hard for you, you've been battling this for a while now. I know we already talked about it in chat, but I just wanted to give you my support. Like I said that night, it really helped Zoe for a few months. She really needed the "catch-up" time. Also, a really big plus for us was the relief from making meals so important, you know, taking away the stress of making sure they ate every bite of food, etc... Mealtime became fun, not stressful. Zoe was fuller in the morning also, but we noticed that after a couple of hours, her appetite was back to normal. She went from 14 lbs. to 19 lbs. that first month, the docs were astonished! She continued to gain about 4 lbs. a month until it came out. Oh, and like Jane said, Zoe did throw up also at first, don't worry, it should calm down and go away. I hope this helps some. Know that we are here for you if you need us.

Love and hugs<img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">
