GI Docs at CF Clinics

Our CF Clinic has a Nutritionist, but not a GI doc. This drives me bonkers, especially because my kiddo is incredibly pancreatic insufficient and most of her issues have been digestive. The GI doc we were referred to (I heard from another CF mom) is not THAT familiar with CF. So what's the point? It's like taking your Volvo to a Toyota Dealership... to use a really bad analogy.

There is another CF Clinic within 30 miles of us that does have GI docs in the clinic. Do you think we should make the switch based on this?

I'm not completely married to our Pulmonologist, so changing clinics wouldn't be that big of deal. Do you think GI Docs are an essential aspect of CF care? Or does a Nutritionist suffice? I'd love your experiences/help! Thanks so much in advance! -Elise Free

i thought all accredited cf clinics have to have a gi doc. hmmm... If your daugther has digestive issues primarily, i would definitely switch as it would be essential to her care. My kids don't even have digestive issues, they are sufficient for now, but the gi doc checks on them every now and then anyhow. I'd say make the switch.

I would switch. The GI doc is part of the team. IT's like having one of everything. I think you really need one. Plus they also keep an eye out on the liver. We would be lost without ours.

Our cf center here in Houston does not have GI drs as part of the team. My kids GI dr was in her own practice but now she is at the children's hospital. GI issues have been such an issue for my kids. I can't imagine how parents just go by what the cf dr and nutritionists have to say. Their GI dr has been SOOOOO much help getting my kids to gain weight, my son's liver issues, etc. She has tons more knowledge that than the cf team. My kids GI dr has quite a few other cf patients that she sees. She is even married to one of the CF drs. Could you ask your pulmonologist to recommend you to a GI that treats other cf kids at the clinic?
Sharon, mom of Sophia, 7 and Jack, 5 both with cf, Grant, 3 weeks no cf
