Hello. My son is 4 years old. Before he was 6 months old he had RSV twice. From that point on he has had to take breathing treatments on and off. He does fine in the summer months and most of the winter. He gets sick often in spring and fall. He has also had to take mirolax to help with constipation for about a year. He is a very very active child. He is in a normal range for his height and only slightly below normal for his weight. His doctor has always told me he thinks he has a type of childhood ashma that he would grow out of. The month of September has been very hard on him, and he has had to take treatments the entire month and has now got a ear infection. After a month of being sick, the doctor suggested allergy tests, and I just off handly said "You don't think he could have cf, do you?" And his shoulders just dropped. My heart did too...So now we are going for the test in two weeks. We have two older very healthy children, no cf in our family that we know of. Besides the ashma deal, our son is pretty much very healthy. So what do ya'll think, could it have just slipped by all this time unnoticed? And do any of you know how long it will take to get the test results from the sweat test back? Will they tell us that day? Thank you for any help.

Well, I'm going to hope and pray that the test is negative. But, just in case it's not, you're already taking advantage of a great resource. You'll find answers and support here. Welcome.

It's so hard to say if your son's case sounds like CF or not. Every individual is different and yes, sympotms can slip by for a very long time. There are adults who are not diagnosed until the 30's, 40's or later.

You are wise to persue testing. Answers are a good thing and a proper diagnosis can only help you to get the care he needs.

My older (non-cf) daughter was sweat tested shortly after her sister was born and diagnosed. We had results that same day, if I remember correctly. A sweat test is a good place to start, but, I think you should also go ahead and request blood testing. Sweat tests can be ambiguous, and the last thing you want is more uncertainty and waiting.

Good luck to you. Please don't hesitate to ask you questions here. We've all been there.

Welcome. I'm sorry that your son is struggling so much.

I'm glad your doctor is willing to order the testing you requested. I do hope that the test will be done at an accredited facility. Sweat tests can be very unreliable. Especially if not done properly. We have many members here who have negative sweat test numbers, but who have 2 CF mutations. I'd request the genetic test as well.

I think you should continue with the allergy testing too. With your son's symptoms increasing in the spring & fall, it very well could be allergies causing him so much trouble. Is he currently taking any allergy meds?

I hope you get the answers you need to help your son.

He takes Albuterol & Pulmicort through his Nebulizer machine. He also takes zyrtec. He has never had digestive problems except just having problems being "regular." He takes mirolax to help with that. I keep kissing on him to see if he seems salty, that is driving him crazy which is so funny, but I don't see any sign of that. He is so hyper all the time. And rarely is sick with anything but the breathing stuff. I don't know, I just hate the not knowing, ya know? I may be crazy before they get this test done! We have a very good Childrens Hoptital that will be doing the test.

I hope your son does not have CF. It could very well be allergies because he is sick by the seasons. Also, asthma can cause breathing problems since it does shut down the airways. It is always better to be safe athen sorry. Cover all your bases including the sweat test. Also, depending where your son was born most states now do new born screening. You check and see if it was done on your son or not.

The sweat test come back in the same day if done at a credited center/hospital for testing. And like the others have said some people test negative and do have CF. Blood test are a sure bet.

Good luck and I will keep my fingers crossed he does not have it.
