Going from PS to PI

Ok, this is really weird. I have always been PS, not a single trace of the probs associated with PI. I'm an average to light eater, on the chubby side and have always had to watch what I eat to not gain too much weight. I've been CFRD for 22 years and very stable on insulin.

The last four days I've been ravenous - eating, eating, eating non stop. Even Terry noticed and said WTH? Yesterday, I had nasty, non stop gas like I have NEVER had. Today, out of the blue, my BS dropped to the 30s while on my daily walk and I almost passed out before I could get home. About an hour later, I had to run to the bathroom, had a nasty, stinky, fill the toilet session accompanied by little orange floating oil blobs! This has NEVER happened. I even asked Terry to take a look at my oil slick because I was in such disbelief.

Sorry if this is TMI, but I'm not really sure what happens when you are PI, does this sound like something associated with being PI???

Obviously, I will be calling clinic tomorrow, but being Sunday thought I'd ask you guys in the know. Thanks for any input.

Is it possible you had food poisoning?

I'm not sure how they test for being PI other then your symptoms becoming an ongoing pattern. If this wasn't a one time deal, then it does sound like you're going to have to start taking enzymes before every meal and a few with snacks.

I've always been PI (but not CFRD) so I don't know how it typically comes about, but this certainly sounds like a problem if it happens again. If it is PI symptoms, then just know it can be pretty easy to control with those enzyme pills. You might have to do trial and error with different brands, but once you get the right one you can eat all you want and the idea is that you can absorb the food/nutrients and not have all those unwanted symptoms! Hopefully that was just a weird situation and doesn't happen again.

Thanks Kelly, I'm hoping it was a weird isolated incident as well.

I suppose if I start losing weight fast for no apparent reason, especially after eating like a horse, that may be a clue.

I just feel so stupid not really knowing what to look for if or when the change happens. I've always been told that I could become PI at any time.

Hmmm, sounds possible, or maybe you are having a low bloodsugar spell (I had one of those for one day- spent the whole day on the verge of having it go low, after being low the night before) and that is what made you hungry and have the dangerous low (Okay, next time, take your glucose tablets or some sugary candy in your pocket-you've scared me- 30s??? ); and maybe you are PS enough to handle your regular diet, but not the 4 days worth of "continuous eating"? Just a thought. I only need an enzyme with really big or really greasy meals, and don't have a (low) weight issue . I hope your tummy (and your appetite!) are settled down today .
