Going from PS to PI

I was always PS. I only knew that I became PI because of blood work. My protein levels were way below normal because I was not absorbing my food properly.

I wouldn't think that it would come on you like you describe. Sounds like you ate something tainted.

Think of it this way.....

IF you didnt have CF....you would probably be thinking you had a stomach bug or ate something bad, but

since you do have CF you connect it to that. It might or might not be. Its hard to say on a one time incident. Keep an eye on things even if its not that extreme.

IF you are becoming PI then you might need enzymes. I hope it was just a passing thing!

On of the things to check if you're PI is to have a fecal fat study done. I just wrote an article about it.

Visit my blog <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://understandingcysticfibrosis.blogspot.com/

</a>
Another article that might help you figure out what's going on in the BM department is to read the article <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://understandingcysticfibrosis.blogspot.com/2008/01/understanding-bowel-movements.html">Understanding Bowel Movements</a>

Since the pancreas is in charge of secreting enzymes and regulating blood sugar, the fact that you had problems with both your digestion and your BS, is a sign that something is off track. The fact that you passed a lot of oil is very indicative that you may be having PI issues. Talk about it with your doctor and maybe s/he can recommend a fecal fat study, and do other diagnostics.

In the meantime, do NOT use kaopectate or pepto bismol to control the loose stools. They can create a bigger problem than they solve and are not recommended for CFers.
